Openstreetmap loading very slowly
« on: 10 November, 2009, 02:47:06 pm »
Apologies if this question should be elsewhere.

Can anyone tell me why Openstreetmaps loads a map very slowly (several minutes) on my machine, whereas Google maps at the same street level of details are loading instantly?
Are the maps stored in different ways?

Thanks for any help.

Just tried it - but I don't notice that on my (oldish) PC running Firefox.
Of course, there are a few areas where the density of information on OSM is higher than on Google Maps.

OSM's slippymap is just a big old pile of image tiles.  I suggest Random Internet Crapness as it's fine for me right now.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

OSM very rarely opens cleanly for me - it's usually populated with "More from OSM soon" tiles. In fact, I've pretty much given up on it from here.

I live in the boondocks and have two tin-cans and a piece of wet string that serve as a broadband connection, so that is probably why.

Thanks for all the comments.
OSM is loading quickly now, so whatever the delays were earlier in the day, they have disappeared.
