Garmin Etrex - Mac compatability
« on: 05 December, 2009, 11:14:07 am »
Not really considered a GPS before, consequently know next to nothing. Presumably these things work like cameras and external disks and stuff- whop the ol' USB cable into the Mac and everything works just great, right?

Close to great I can live with too.

The Garmin software for Mac is bolleaux.

I use Ascent, a paid for application.

My Edge 705 connected to the Mac no bother and I can drag .gpx files across to it - so not needing any fancy software (I make routes in Tracklogs)
It is simpler than it looks.

Thanks. That's the sort of stuff I can't find on the Garmin website.

I've got the Edge 205. Garmin Training Centre for Mac is rubbish - half the time it doesn't recognise the Garmin when it's plugged in. Like Ja ded I use Ascent which works brilliantly and is a bargain at £30ish.

Yebbut the topic says Etrex - Mac compatibility

No, an Etrex does not 'work like a camera and everything just works'.
The Edge types do, and so do the Colorado / Oregon / Dakota types.  Not the Etrexes.

And what eTrex? A bog standard yellow eTrex is a much different beast to an eTrex Legend/Vista/Summit/Venture.

A bog standard yellow eTrex is certainly not drag/drop plug-n-play with a Mac, but you can get it to work.

From the Ascent website:

Garmin eTrex Vista Cx (direct sync)
Garmin eTrex Vista HCx (direct sync)

These work with Ascent.
It is simpler than it looks.

Thanks all- that's given me some ideas and helped me get started, I'll browse this bit of the forum for a bit and start working out what I want.

I just tell the eTrex (Legend HCx) to go into USB Mass Storage mode, connect it to the Mac, and copy the relevant tracklogs or map files across. If I want to get waypoints then I use GPSBabel+.
