Online picture storage - not iCloud
« on: 07 May, 2016, 05:41:31 pm »
I'm currently using iCloud because I had a Mac. It really is pants - slow to upload, slow to do anything really, poorly searchable.

Any other solutions for a simple 'dump the images onto the cloud' storage that isn't a public facing gallery? ie. not Flickr. Happy to pay modest amounts. It would be good to have it merge reasonably seamlessly as a desktop drive on PC/Mac/Linux

Do you want a gallery or simply file storage?

If the latter then why not Dropbox? Looks like a folder in a Windows and Mac, don't know about Linux

It shouldn't require the same amount of space on my local disk, which is a requirement for Dropbox (IIRC)

I know you didn't want Flickr but just start a new account and make everything private. You can choose who you share pics with if they're family or work photos.

I hate Flickr with a passion but I use it to suit my needs. I've got hundreds of private photos on my account, never found them anywhere else so they do stay private.

I've not used it but I've just checked, there's unlimited storage for photos on my Amazon account. I think you have to be a prime member.

20GB is not enough. I'll look at the amazon offering. I am a prime member.

I gave up on online storage for photos I might need to access quickly, I use an external hard drive at home and smart previews in lightroom to keep a 'copy' on my laptop which I can view or work on while I'm away - a library of 60k photos and videos is 1.5TB on the hard drive but only 30gb ('only' :) ) on the hard drive.

nb- I can only work on them within lightroom, not photoshop or any other external editor.

Verizon just took over Yahoo, hence Flickr.  Suggestion is that they might junk it.

I've been using PBase since 2003. Costs ~$20 p.a., you can do your own CSS, no adverts. Not as glitzy as Flickr but adequate.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

I use google drive, it's linked to google photo, it's $9.99 a month for 1 tb. The google photo search is astounding, I can type "dog" and it will search for images of dogs I've taken, also face recognition, location recognition, and it can auto create albums based on when a photo was taken and where my mobile phone said I was at the time, if the photos themselves don't have GPS data.
