I'm curious here, why use the same approach for a 200? I admit I'm at the front of the bunch on 100-200 distance, with a 200 being 8 hours-ish riding time for me. I would definitely not be too tired to drive, given 1-2 hours to eat, drink, chat after the event.

A 300 would be a step up, and a 400 definitely requiring night riding and in my mind definitely requiring planned rest.

Health & Fitness / Re: Finger injury
« Last post by Sergeant Pluck on Yesterday at 09:55:59 pm »
This was flaring up again - the last remnant of the wound was opening up a little so that it had edges around the circumference again. I have always had a suspicion that there was some little thing inside there that needed to make an exit. A couple of days ago, what looked like a tiny bit of hardened skin emerged. Now, finally, the last little bit seems to be filling up from the bottom and I am hopeful it is now healing correctly. For the first time, I can open bottles and whatnot without discomfort. Fingers crossed  ::-)

The moral of the story, I guess, is that if it looks like it needs stitched, or an expert eye cast over it, it probably does, Even on Christmas Eve. Especially if it is your main finger on your main hand.

Was out the front of Larrington Towers massacring green things at lunchtime when some variety of twin-engined biplane flew over.  I think it was a DH Dragon Rapide but can’t be sure.
I saw that!
I was taking some air outside (someone indoors was setting up a chocolate scent dispenser  and I had to leave to get some air), it was heading due south from where I was at Waltham Cross.
Doubtless from Duxford.
I think your Dragon Rapide contention is most likely spot on.

Entries are open for 2024's Bryan Chapman Memorial 600!
Saturday 18th May
https://www.pedalution.co.uk/events/bryan-chapman-memorial-600/

Complementing it will be:
3 day Pauline Porter Populaire 2-2-2
Friday 17th May
https://www.pedalution.co.uk/events/pauline-porter-populaire-222/

Anglesey & Back 300+300
Saturday 18th May
https://www.pedalution.co.uk/events/anglesey-back-300-300/

The Bryan Chapman has a slight rework. On the return from Snowdonia the route will come back as the outward route along the coast through Harlech with the sleep control at Aberdyfi. This easier night section allows for the inclusion of Gospel Pass on the return with little change to the elevation gain.

The Anglesey & Back will have a sleep stop at Menai Bridge where even the full value rider has time for some winks before the return 300. Due to shortest distance stuff you'll be following the coast from Machynlleth rather than hopping over Corris Pass.

The Pauline Porter Populaire is roughly 200 a day. Where possible it will use quieter roads and thus the route differs in several spots and has some more climbing involved. Sleeping will be at Kings YHA both nights.

Both latters have limited availability as there will be no hot bedding. There is the option to camp on the Populaire at Kings for a reduced rate.

If anyone wants to volunteer please do DM me. There'll be a helpers ride 2 weeks prior.

Big thanks to Pauline Porter for letting me honour her creation of the BCM by putting her name to the Populaire!

Last entries available until midnight tonight.

For PPP222:

I don't understand the difference here https://www.pedalution.co.uk/events/pauline-porter-populaire-222/ :

"9.3-10.3kph is the overall speed for the Arrivée opening times. Daily times are based on 12.5-25kph for each days’ latest start. "

Does the 9.3-10.3 mean anything in practice if the control times are based on 12.5-25?

i think it means if you included the sleep time that they suggest (restarting each day at 7-ish) then your overall speed would be 9.3
but if you just treat each day as separate and starting at 7am, finishing at 1am then the speed for each day is 12.5

For example, the first day is 225km.   Average speed for the 24h between the start at 7am and leaving for the second day at 7am over 225km is 9.375kph

I've decided that in future any 300km + events I organise will start / finish at a railway station with no easy car parking close by.

My events this year (a 200 and a 300) already meet these criteria and my draft future 600 is penned in with a start at Haymarket Station Edinburgh where parking is effectively impossible within a number of miles

I cant police what riders do before / after an event but I can take practical steps to avoid recklessness.

I guess that means waving goodbye to some events based that might have been based in the likes of Auchterarder, Ballachulish Dunning and Forfar but its for the greater good.

A wake up call quite literally

Audax / Re: Wild Atlantic Way Audax 2200km in 2024

To be fair, most of us at the start line in 2016 didn’t know if we could do it. That year about a 64% success rate, though this year different format and lower daily distance requirements.  Bryan Chapman success or failure won’t tell you if WAWA will go well for you.  But it will give you a marker for where you are at.

I have entered, as has another audaxer close by.   We’ve booked some accommodation to share along the route to save costs. We do joke it’ll be us two, and a few from Audax Ireland.

It’s a cracking route.
