Jupiter Ascending.

By the Wachowski brothers.  Stylish with an ok central idea, but yet another disappointing film by them.  More Matrix Reloaded than Matrix (which remains truly awesome btw).

Basically a heroine is fated to rule the Earth, falls in love with an alien, beats a dynastic family, blah blah.  Generic enough.  But the conceit that populated planets are not just random rocks in space (I could be more specific but won't spoil it should anybody want to watch it) was interesting, even if it wasn't handled that well.

'Stylish' was the whole point of the film, IMHO.  The story was just there to string it together (and I don't mean that in a bad way).

I stand corrected.
I did see that in the credits at the end.
It struck me at the time as a bit like calling the Marx Brothers the Marxists.
Then I googled 2 minutes ago.....

Wachowskis it is   :-[

Life of Pi

On the plus side, it was lovely to look at. And it had the longest credits I've ever seen on a movie. The production must have employed the population of a small nation.

But, yes, whilst a faithful version of the book the film did somehow lack the enigma.
Pretty much agree with that.

Rather unfortunate timing; every scene involving tiger conflict, I kept thinking of those bloody cats-scared-of-cucumbers videos, of which I'd only been made aware a few hours earlier!

The first 3rd of of it is decent..and then they just keep nibbling at it, breaking it tiny bit at a time, which means you still maintain hope that they can salvage it until the end.
Beautiful images. Loved it just for that.

"Creed" - Word of mouth was that it was good...word of mouth was kinda wrong. It has it's moments. Stallone is good. Some of the cinematography is very good. (some of it standard).  Jordan is pretty poor, but his role is limited to being angry and hitting things, so he mostly gets away with it. The romance could have been skipped entirely and it wouldn't have made any difference to the movie at all.
I was disappointed by the last fight. I had hoped that they would more towards realistic boxing, but I guess it was also a homage to the original Rocky movies.

The Wolf of Wall Street.

It's basically Goodfellas in stockbroking, but none the worse for that.

Excellent.  Some quite good fencing, too.

Cracking film! Not seen it for a while. Very funny, if I recall correctly.

Has anyone seen Grandma? I've just listened to Mark Kermode's review and it has made me very much want to see it.

Erm... The one with Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine, right? My memory is obviously faulty. It's some time since I saw it.

Pitch Perfect 2. Not as good as the first, and the sub plot about Europeans being awesome at acapella singing was a bit strange, but I enjoyed it, and it got me listening to old Pat Benatar songs.

Christmas with The Coopers
Not actually that bad. For a free film. Better than sitting at home with Candy Crush, anyway.

In the Heart Of The Sea
In 3D, but I'd forgotten my 3D glasses. I thought I'd give it 5 minutes and then leave, but I stayed to the end. Chris Hemsworth is dreadfully unconvincingly wooden and 2D, but the plot rattles along quite nicely. I bet the whales look great if you've got the glasses on, mind.

In the Heart Of The Sea

I'm not a fan of Ron Howard, I think he tends to be overly dramatic (which suits some stories, maybe even ^ that one) and definitely overly saccharinises but credit where it's due, he can make a film. Just that I'm not inclined to watch them...

Christ Stopped at Eboli

This is a wonderful film but we're pissed off. We used to have the VHS version, which lasted around 3½ hours, and the cover of our new DVD version still reads "200 minutes", but a lot of scenes have been cut and it finished in just over two hours.  Since we were splitting it over two nights last night's second "half" left us hungry.

Incidentally, the IMDB bio of Gian-Maria Volontè mentions the films in which he appears as a tough-guy baddie destined for a sticky end, and makes no mention of Christ Stopped at Eboli.  Aye well.

Blade Runner

This time on Blu Ray with a decent home sound system and big TV. (I think I own all formats now, including paper & VHS).

It's stunning, even after all this time the sets still hold up.

Ridley Scott at his very, very, best.  A perfect way to spend a dark & rainy Sunday afternoon.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Starwars   At last..

People in the audience occasionally laughed for no obvious reason except they may have watched the previous episodes and understood the joke.

I enjoyed it anyway.

I like all the cuts but, the original release is my favourite. I agree about the Deckard Replicant shouters. Super Twats.

Red 2. Hilarious

As an aside, we saw a bit of the car chase thingy being filmed- a car on the back of a low loader with a big camera up against the windscreen and side window with lots of crew hanging on/ off.

Sorry but Deckard, in the film, is a Replicant.  It couldn't be clearer.
