Carol.  Very good love story set in the 1950s, with brilliant acting and effortless, stylish direction. Reminded me I'm a softy really, as the end fair warmed my cockles.

Newly released Japanese anime, "Your Name", at the ICA, about a boy and girl who find themselves involuntarily swapping bodies. Amusing, along with some gender issues. Also on limited general release now.

Empire of the Sun.  We saw this when it came out, but I had forgotten how wonderful an actor Christian Bale was at such an early age. Knocks the Potter crew into a cocked hat.  Superb film, too.

License to Kill

It has a running gag with numerous drivers doing double takes as Commander Bond clambers upon their truck/vessel/aircraft, but I couldn't help noticing none match up to the double take this pilot  does on discovering a glorious (*) pussy stowed away on his plane

Arrival - last night.

Jolly good stuff, we tossed it up between three well reviewed films out currently, v. Dr Strange and the Branjelina thing  -the latter was worst reviewed of the three - but we've got a bit fed up with kind of exclusively watching superhero type stuff at the cinema in recent years.  So despite it being Sci-Fi we ended up plumping for Arrival and were rewarded with a nice thought provoking and compelling film.  It's definitely not Independence day - no no no.  Very cerebral and I think I shall watch it again so I can fully understand it - I *think* I've kind of got it, but another watch is definitely worth it to check  :-D

Another recommendation anyway

It's a reverse Elvis thing.

I, Daniel Blake

Fitting that the lead character's name is an anagram of "bleak denial".

A hard watch, with several really affecting scenes, particularly one in a food bank.  I left the cinema fizzing with indignation at the harsh reality it portrayed (and which some people I know have had similar experiences to).  The misery was laid on with a trowel in places, and it had a rather misty eyed view of the non-working poor running through it, but I can't deny that this is a powerful clarion call against a society that is failing large swathes of its citizens (or subjects, if you prefer).

Professor Larrington reports that when she saw this recently most people in the cinema were more concerned about the cessation of CPR at the end than about, well, the rest of it.  Albeit that she saw it in Perth WA.

Dirty Grandpa

More like a dirty sanchez wiped across my mind. Scorsese pouts and cusses through a cliche manchild comedy, whoring away at his legacy to make cash money.  Next he'll be doing moneysupermarket adverts akin to Keitel.

Anyway, I'd only recommend this if you needed to switch on the TV to warm up the room.

Felidae

A murder mystery crime story, where almost every character involved in it, is a cat.  It's an interesting take on the concept, and for its era, a well made film.

In the twenty years, since it was made, animation has become a lot more mainstream, and substantially more polished.  This does look more like the older Disney films, albeit this is not a film suitable for children, since it has gore, violence and feline sex.

Overall I think it's an interesting win, although there are various odd and sods in it, which makes it just that little bit poorer than it could have been.  Whether that's due to the translation, the age of the production, or just a more limited budget than most modern animations, I'm unsure.  I think it's worth watching, but don't expect anything too spectacular.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Look Who's Back

A German film (subtitled) in which Hitler awakes on the site of the Fuhrerbunker in 2014, and is assumed to be a method-acting comedian.  It is very funny in parts, very uncomfortable in others (a lot of it was shot on candid camera) and pretty doom-laden at the end.  Highly recommended.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Set in the Harry Potter universe, this is a peculiar film. The core plot is weak, with a pathetic last 15 mins that lacks menace and feels like "oh, we need to stop having fun and wrap this up somehow" and lame twist, but somehow it captures the attention by the sheer brilliance of the setting.

Whilst there are a lot of filler scenes, they do add to the mood. Ultimately, this would have made a great TV show.

SFX heavy, with mixed results. Some are great, particularly the particle dynamics of the dark monster, and more generally those familiar from other films (e.g. Moving posters) as they add to the setting. Others are poor (many of the beasts and the fixing scene at the end) which took me out of the movie.

Cast so-so but Eddie Redmayne buzzes with the right energy.

Overall not as good as the reviews suggest, not essential viewing, but good enough to suggest renting at home in six months' time.

I thought the settings were good but it just went completely overboard on special effects.  Just because they could, I suppose.  The plot was simply drowned out.

Me Before You.

Rubbish script, plot developments you could see a mile off an an extremely dodgy ending that disabled groups were angry about. Just awful.

A film that was not about that mountain in Wales but sounds as if it might have been.

It was remarkably close to this account except for the girl friend.

The worrying thing is that our lot are reportedly worse than theirs..

We were alone in the auditorium except for one other person 8)

Excellent.

Disappointed to learn that there is not a new release called Lord Hereford's Knob - The Movie.
