The Kraken rum. It's pretty good, but I wonder if it's a bit overpriced at £32 per litre.

That's a fair bit less than some of the fancy whiskies, though, and it tastes lovely.

Back from the man creche, dinner appears to need to stay in the oven a bit longer, so a bottle of co-op Argentinian fair trade Malbec has been deployed.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Night of the living stout, by Full Pint.

A local brewery.  For values of local close to Pittsburgh, that is.
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

And now, another relatively local brew.  Great Lakes Nosferatu. Very interesting.

Tesco's own-brand "Revisionist Wheat Beer", brewed for them by Marston's.

It's pretty nice, and an acceptable substitute as neither Erdinger nor Franzikaner was included in the "4 for £6" offer.

(edit: on a slightly related note, noticing that it's brewed by Marston's is making me really hanker after a pink of Banks's Mild.)

After spending 8 years in Wales when I was at university, if I never see Banks' beer again it'll be too soon - practically every bloody pub in Aberystwyth had Banks' Mild (or bitter, or both if you were really lucky) and Worthingtons. And in a lot of cases very little else.

*shudder*

Anyhow ...

On Wednesday night I had possibly the best beer I have ever tasted - "Great Yorkshire Brewery Blackout" which, as it turns out, is brewed by the Cropton brewery so is fairly local. It's a chocolate stout which manages to smell and taste like ... chocolate. Really.

I am drinking a pint of St. Austell Tribute. I am thinking how thin and insipid it is. This could be becaue recently I have been spoiling myself on ESB and Golden Pride, both from Fullers, which are much stronger, fuller-flavoured beers.

I have a number of bottles of a naturally-conditioned ale from St. Austell, called "Proper Job". It really is, compared to this, and I might follow up with one later.

I followed up with Proper Job to start with ( ??? ) and I can confirm it is rather good. And at £1.50 (4 for £6  @ Waitrose ) somewhat sweeter than the hoppy flavour would suggest

Kasteel Rouge - 8% ABV and inhabits the intersection of fruit beer and unleaded petrol.

Actually, it's not that bad. In fact, it's really rather good - if, like me, you go for anything that's vaguely cherry flavoured then this is dangerously drinkable. Even worse, at least for my remaining synapses, I found another bottle of it in the 'collection' on top of my bookcase  ;D

One of my own IPAs, I must say it is a very good drink. Though next time less sugar for the carbonation.

I think that Banks's mild might have been the first beer I bought for myself. And I think it might have been about 60p a pint in the Brown Derby in Brum.

Broadside.

The first beer I bought was 1/2 - as in 1s 2d -  a pint.

I was born in the Black Country, but I almost never see it down here in Wiltshire. Not that I can remember spotting, anyway.

Not right now, but last night and I might have another tonight - Fursty Ferret and Old Golden Hen. Cheap in Tesco, innit.

Sherry. I might graduate onto red wine and/or ale later.

Bateman's Hazlenut Brownie beer. The most chocolately beer I've ever tasted. I look at the rear label revealed why: its 1% Belgian chocolate. Nummy but definately not a session beer.

Do not clench. It only makes it worse.
