How do I know which wires to connect, particulary as I don't have the manual/fitting instruction for the thermostat?

Just try them in pairs, until your hair stops smoking...

 ;)

Hmm, well I heard it on the internet, it must be true. *Wanders down stairs with screwdriver*

Teehee. I'm not entirely daft (quiet at the back), I should probably just call my grandad but our landline is being rubbish as well. One thing after another at the mo.  ::-)

Does it actually have more than two?

It has three: blue, yellow and red. It's a Honeywell T40 if that's any help?

I could take a photo and pop it up here if you want?

Cut the red one, it's always the red one.

Except, maybe they thought of that.

Cut the blue one!

Ah, that'll probably be a live, neutral[1] and a switched wire back to the boiler that goes live when heat is required.  The colours are likely to be at the whim of the installer, though anyone with an ounce of sense[2] will have used the blue for neutral and red for live.

There are probably markings on the stat terminals that would give a clue which is which...

[1] There's probably a small heating element within the stat to reduce the hysteresis of the system that requires power.
[2] Never assume!

Hmm, there's a little diagram in the back of the cover. Was going to photo it and the 'stat but, of course, my camera battery is dead.

Back in a bit with a drawing.

Tadaa!

Would I be right in thinking I need to connect wires 1 and 3? Or would it be 1 and 2?

1&3! The other alternative will cause a loud bang as you would be shorting L and N....

Seconded.  Though it'd probably just blow a fuse somewhere.

Connecting 1 and 3 should make the heating come on.

Similarly, if you have a multimeter, stick it on the continuity/lowest resistance range.  It should display something meaning an approximation of infinity, and then drop to a very close to zero number (and possibly go beep) when you touch the probes together.  Disconnect the wiring from the thermostat and stick the probes on terminals 1 and 3.  As you turn the thermostat up, it should close the circuit.

At entry to a house, there is no neutral - so I don't think your house will blow up if you connect live and neutral (neutral and earth are only separated at the junction box). It should trigger your circuit breakers.

Only under the PME system.  TN-S (separate earth and neutral conductors from the transformer) is more common in the UK.

Mother of my son's mate: You told me your son has anger management issues when we had a chat a couple of weeks ago. Do you think, then, that allowing him at 9-y-o to play Call of Duty - Black Ops is going to calm him down? He just tried sneaking it into our house, but he'll never make a sneak thief. I'll allow a little discrepancy, but not that much!

Thanks for all the advice regarding thermostat and multimeterage.

However I have discovered it's not the thermostat. Before I got round to poking wires I had another look at the 3 way valve doofer in the airing cupboard, found a little lever hidden round the backside. Had a choice between auto (which it was on) and manual.

Had a lot of play around auto but very stiff moving to manual. Could feel something moving so forced it round (gently) and it seems to be working. Lots of play in both direction with the lever so not sure if it's doing naything but we have heat.

Of course I may have just stuck the valve on heating now so will see if we have hot water in the morning. Gonna have to get a man in to service the boiler/gas fire I think but at least it's not as urgent now.

My head has been aching a little for over a day now and I'm feeling mildly crap - not enough to be off to bed, but enough that I didn't go for a ride in the sun earlier. Meh.

I dispair for the human race. We seem to be getting more stupid :-(

Today in central London I saw a man pushing a pram along. Attached to the handle of the pram (on one side) was a thing much like a tag-along, wheel, seat & bars. With a small child riding on it.

Wearing a fucking helmet.

The 1130 from St Pancrap to Derby onna Sunday takes two anna half hours.  Stopping at every lamppost on the way, except, strangely, Loughborough.

What, pray, is the point in stopping at BOTH Luton Airport Parkway (for some 12 minutes) AND Luton?

Now at Kettering.  And the trolley has run out of sandwiches.  How can things get any worse?

The WiFi, for which East Midlands Trains charges £4 a pop fails, and the bog blocks/floods/runs out of water.

I have made 4 journeys on east Midlands Trains since 1/10/2011.
There was no trolley at all on one trip.
There were no sandwiches on one trolley.
The bog failed on my return from Derby on 13/10/2011...

Wi-fi (free to those of us in Leather class) is working fine.  "Hotel California" has just come on my MP3 player.  I'm clenching to avoid use of the bog.  All is good.
(Except we're now parked on a steeply canted curve at South Wigston Junction, waiting 10 mins for our slot into Leicester.  And the free coffee in Leather Class tastes of, well, nothing.)

I've been eaten by beasties.  Probably in That Suffolk.  I'm covered in itchy welts, which wasn't conducive to pleasant train travel earlier.
