What is it?

I found this on the floor in our temporary stone-walled kitchen.

Google image search returned this:

Best guess for this image: reptile

It looks vaguely aquatic yet there is no pond around here - we are on a hill top.

Anyone know what it is and where is best to release it?

It's a triton marbré., Triturus marmoratus. Found in France and Spain. Found in hedges, heathland, wooded areas, and semi nocturnal. You could release it anywhere where it won't instantly be eaten by something larger although salamanders are reputedly poisonous or at any rate unpleasant to eat. We get fire salamanders round us in Finistere. We may well get these but I have never seen one in the garden.

Excellent, I was afraid I'd have to find a pond.  I shall release it at the back of my barn where it should be as safe and undisturbed as possible.  Should thrive there better than in my kitchen!  I am in the Limousin s. of Limoges BTW.

Thanks for that.

Tritons being newts I'd have expected a semi-aquatic habitat, but I'm not Gussie Finknottle.  We don't see the marbled variety over this way, just lizards by the score and the odd fire salamander.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight
