I hope it does go ahead.  Just two borders sounds like it should be reasonably manageable.

That's a good point about fairness.  These things are never completely fair.  Some people get injured and can't start, get hit by cars or bitten by dogs.  Some can't get time off and some can't afford to take part, and so on.  The Greek ferry being so long and late in the race already introduced a significant level of unfairness, and the test for Greece sounds like it just adds a bit more to it rather than creating a new problem where there wasn't a bit of a one already.

Probably a bit late now but, if they moved the finish to Sicily instead of Greece, it would get rid of the main issue, and be a lot more scenic too.

I think the NC4000 is more likely to go ahead as I get the feeling the organisers are desperate to make it happen and I suspect they won't have the same fairness concerns.  They said a couple of weeks ago that they thought it was 99% likely to happen, which I thought was over-optimistic but indicative of intent.  I put it at about 60% then.

If it does happen, with 9 border crossings, testing could become a real chore.  And it's not clear (to me at least) that Brits are going to be able to go to Europe given the Indian variant issue currently blowing up in our faces.  With 10 countries, it only takes one to say no for me to have to DNS.

That could change things...

The article says "Last week, the EU agreed on a pass to allow travel across the bloc's 27 countries for all those who have been fully vaccinated with an approved vaccine, recently tested negative or recovered from an infection. It is expected to launch by July."

I wonder if this travel pass would override the 7 day quarantine rule?

Nope, countries still have the right to impose a quarantaine rule.

Email from Lost dot, race suspended to 2022. Cost will go up by 75gbp to cover extra costs to lost dot.

Seems very reasonable and sensible. It's a shame, but I understand why they have done it.

I guess new route time.

I'm sorry for those who had hoped to ride.

I wonder if they will flip back to the 2020 route for next year?

from the polling of the riders

25% think possible
38% not possible
rest unsure

I'm a bit surprised at the low percentage of possible -- I imagined it would be more evenly split (but then I suppose one could say it is quite evenly split, excluding the don't knows)

Ahh what a shame.
I thought things were heading in the right direction and convinced myself that the race would likely go ahead and then the new variant seemed to throw a spanner in the works.
I have a spot on TPR which is still a few months away so at least something on the horizon.
We have flights booked to get off the Island July. Plan to head to our place in France and do some casual riding instead together now the race is off. If the quarantine rules are still in place then likely stay in UK and perhaps do the King Alfred Way or something else low key and fun.
Back to TCR I would imagine they will revert to the original route via the Balkans next year. If so I won't be sorry to see the ferry go, Im with ranks on the issues there. The route planning for the new route at least put the Appenines on the radar. Something to add to the mental calendar for a future tour, it looked super interesting.
See you in 2022 :-(. Or in the Pyrenees if any of you switch out your entries.

Thankfully it’s time to start to focus on training, bike kit and in November route planning begins. It’s been mentally straining as 2 Winters of training yet no race and understandably due to covid. Like most participants hoping we will get to that start line in July and the long awaited TCRNo8 will finally get the GO!
I’ve swapped my backup lights since 2018 but sticking to my dynamo and power pack backup. Also opting for 28mm tyres and a secure kit lock down for the Roubaix preparation. I can see the first 4/5 days being reasonably flat before the Alps and fun ascents truly begin if previous route is reintroduced? Anyone else
Lucky enough to have got a place in the race?

On the plus side. No France!

I need to spend some time plotting routes to work out what it all means tho. Getting over the alps is going to be a fun challenge.

Edit:
Now I've had a bit more of a look, it appears that going by the min distances from Lost Dot, total distance is 4100km. Which may explain the 16 days for the finish control closure, rather than the more typical 15.

On the first leg the minimal distance route won't be the fastest route. I can even imagine a few riders to ride via Hamm to evade some nasty hilly area's.

Indeed, the Bergisch Land - lovely cycling country, and where I head to when we visit my mother in law, but not necessarily ideal for this.

I think it's a better route than the original 2020 version.  G'bergen is a much better place to start than Brest, and the cobbles didn't do anything for me.  The ride across Germany will have far more routing options than there were for the one across northern France, as it was constrained by the coast.  Burgas is a lovely place for the finish.

CP2 - CP3 is very similar to the 2016 race so the same routing decisions will need to be made.  I took the coastal option then, before I'd heard of the Bora wind! But, again, there are multiple options here so interesting.  And there are options for the CP3-4 section - this was the bit that I did most work on two years ago.

I expect the rules on which roads in Romania are allowed might evolve as time goes by.

So an interesting route and one for those who enjoy route-planning!

The D4 Radveg looks to be a pretty direct W to E. if lumpy.

And certainly won't be via the fastest roads.

Austria has changed the law to require covid vaccinations. No idea how that is going to work for tourists, but might be something to be aware of.

Frank, with the brief back and forth about bike weight & set up where we diverge on opinion.
Do you think the off road transalpine parcour may not be a game changer?

I think, first of all, it's a decision for Anna!
We need clarification if it is up, down or either.
