Harris Cyclery aka Sheldon Brown
« on: 11 June, 2021, 07:31:09 pm »
Sad day, hope someone keeps the site going

Quote
Sad news for cyclists all over the world: the famous Harris Cyclery in Boston USA is closing  permanently on June 13. Many a beginner (and indeed veteran) mechanic has relied on the archived cycle knowledge of its most famous staff member, Sheldon Brown harriscyclery.net[

We are hopeful that Sheldon's website sheldonbrown.com will continue to be supported despite Harris's closure. This would be a sad loss for people caring for their cycles and understanding how these amazing machines operate.

Very sad.   I became an "adult" cyclist in the late 80's/early 90's & discovered the internet at about the same time.  Sheldon was a constant on Usenet & the website a great source of information & inspiration.  I built my first wheels following his instructions & diagrams.

The first time I broke the Sram 3 x 7 on my Pino I had trouble getting a replacement central shaft for it. I ended up getting in touch with Sheldon, I think I even spoke to him on the phone. He had good news and bad news. Good news was he had a whole box of misc Sachs/Sram spares. Bad news was they were all unlabeled. I sent him a photo of the required part, marked up with dimensions. He had one. It wasn't listed on his website, so, as per his instructions, I had to order Part Number Special and put in the comments "Sheldon has this on his desk." It arrived at my house in the UK all the way from Massachusetts a few days later .

I've often wondered if the character in "The Big Bang Theory" was called Sheldon because of his knowledge of everything, like Brown of the ilk.  It is certainly a terrific website.  I occasionally revise from it so I don't look like an idiot in front of my friend Torslanda!

It's where I learnt to do stuff before park Tool put Calvin on you tube.
It's still where I learn stuff that isn't common enough for park tool to have out Calvin on you tube with.

Running...

Thanks. I'm nowhere near my computer at the moment, else I'd do it myself.

Thanks to all those mirroring.

Me please if it is a format that Win10 understands - yes I know I'm using Micro$hift but I'm not clever enough for other stuff. Or a tutorial on how to copy it all in W10.

I've never seen The Big Bang Theory but have nevertheless assumed this to be the case.

Disappointingly wikishit says no:

The character of Sheldon Cooper was inspired by a computer programmer personally known to series co-creator Bill Prady.[15] He is named in honor of actor/producer Sheldon Leonard[16] and Nobel Prize Laureate Leon Cooper.

Can hardly fathom that it was 2008 that he died - that's 13 years

Remembering when Sheldon passed on a good few years ago..   we collected donations for community theatre and passed them on to the London Bubble Theatre as I remember.
We made up bike stickers - Sheldon is my CoPilot if I'm not wrong.

Zipperhed organised the stickers IIRC - I still have mine.
We went on a memorial ride.

13 June, to be precise.  It looks as if sheldonbrown.com will keep going at the moment.  Anither specialist bike shop gone, as we move further towards box-shifters who just want you to buy a new bike.  Having said that, Harris was pretty useless for UK customers due to enormous shipping charges, as with most US shops.
