This is what I was getting at. In the 30 quid a tree example I can't see how they can be responsibly disposed of for that price, let alone anything else...

My brother did offer me his chainsaw but I quite like all my fingers where they are.

I've been hearing people complaining for a few weeks about empty shelves in supermarkets. Hadn't noticed any myself. But I've just been into the "big Sainsbury's" (not really very big but bigger than others locally) that used to be my regular supermarket pre-Covid. First time in there since 1BP. So that's where the empty shelves are... Including the whole delicatessen counter shut. Though TBF it is student time. And despite the gaps on the shelves, there were half-unpacked boxes all over the floor. Place is a complete mess! Mask wearing was high though.

I guess in lockdown it was "shop local to reduce infection and preserve community", now it's "shop small to find what you want".

The specialist counters in my local Mr Sainsbury’s House of Toothy Comestibles have been closed since March last year, and it appears to be the same story at the one local to Fort Larrington.

Ah yes. They appear to have been overwhelmingly gone.

Probably never to reopen, as margins are greater on the pre-packed versions.

They may not have anything to which to repurpose the space, but leaving the empty deli refrigerated display does give a derelict air. Whole shop was a mess I haven't seen in a supermarket since KwikSave. I'm inclined to think managerial ineptitude must be playing a role in this particular branch. Also, my favourite Tibetan Buddhist checkout operator lady wasn't on shift!

Still there in Waitrose and I sometimes get myself a treat if in the mood. Didn't notice last time I was in a big M&S as it was a game of dodgems avoiding clusters of fat lumps not wearing masks.

We had a tree surgeon look at the back garden. Turns out the trees at the far end are bastarding Leylandii , so rather than my original plan of just getting rid of 5 to make space for a shed and leaving a few for the birds to hide in I asked for a quote to kill them all utterly to deth.
That was £750 vs £1380. Pingu went :o :-X

Well, I got another guy round, who is from an established outfit. He said it was an easy job with no real climbing involved and his jaw dropped when I told him the first quote.
This one: £380 for the lot.

Open in our Waitrose and Morrisons.  Closed in one of our local Tescos (open in other Tescos' in the area) and our big Sainsbury's.

Given that Morrisons are up for sale, I can't see them lasting long there.

Here's another data point:

We had 20 very overgrown Leylandii taken down a month or so back.
They totally blocked out light from the neighbour's garden.

These were big boys, around 4 people high.
Way beyond a DIY job for me and my ikkle chainsaw.

This was done by Roy Cowie ( see posts passim, 'By appointment to Brenda, Big Lugs and the rest' ), so at the higher end of the market. Not cowboys.
Total cost was somewhere around £700.

It was a big job to remove them, a squad of several workers, several vans and the biggest timberwolf wood-chomper I've ever seen.

The 30cm steel rule in the second pic gives an idea of scale.

Tree Surgeon who I have used before. Branches shredded on site and removed. Trunks sawn into logs and removed. Comes back later at end of week and grinds the stumps. Leaves neat and tidy.

Took down a conifer of some sort for next door, stump only about 30 cm, drilled deep holes all over it with a spade bit and in a couple of years it had rotted away completely.
Should work on soft stumps such as yours, don't know about hard stumps. I must pop across the road and do that to some stumps of ash and a type of willow before this interregnum ends on Monday.
