MEWBS - The Mid Essex Weekend Breakfast Series
« on: 26 November, 2015, 12:39:59 pm »
At the risk over Mid Essex over kill I bring you the Mid Essex Weekend Breakfast Series (MEWBS....yes pronounced the same as Moobs)

The idea of this thread is once again to free up the Mid Week Thread a little but as the title suggest the main idea is to get out early on weekends have some breakfast and get back home to limit impact on family life (obviously other weekend rides can also be incorporated into the thread).

My thinking is that a location be suggest and agreed up on and people join the ride at the start, along the route or meet at the breakfast location. Have some breakfast, some good banter then get back home (or ride on), all very simple.

If you are planning on heading out and want to open it up to the group can I suggest that the following criteria be made known?
1. Day/Date
2. Where you are planning to have breakfast
3. Approximate ETA to be at breakfast

Optionally you could add where and when people can meet to ride out and a route. (Personally I find my early morning rides more fun with no planned route)

Anyone know if there is an equivalent of the Good Beer Guide for Fry Ups?

Possible Locations include (will update as people add to the thread as much as possible)

Wally's Shed, Acton
Station Buffet, Manningtree
Mo's Cafe, Tiptree
D's Diner, Hatfield Peverel
Owl's hill Tearoom, Terling
The Braxted Bakery, Little Braxted
Various Weatherpsoons Houses
Red Lodge Cafe, Red Lodge
The Blue Egg, Bardfield
Maglia Rosso, Hawstead
Green Farm, Halstead
Spencer's, Wickham St Paul's
Round Bush, Mundon
Bungalow Cafe, Marks Tey
The Temeraire [Wetherspoons], Saffron Walden
Café Mocha, Saffron Walden
Bicicletta, Saffron Walden
Riverside Cafe, Sawbridge Worth
The Shed, Sawbridgeworth
Bretts Farm Bistro, White Roding
Hatfield Heath Café, Hatfield Heath
Cabin Dairy cafe, Burnham
Tall Green House café, Burnham-on-Crouch
The Gilt Rooms, West Mersea
The Company Shed, West Mersea

Feel free to add to the list, there must be a lot of knowledge of these kinds of places on this forum

I'm planning on being out this Saturday, I will post some details tonight or tomorrow morning unless someone beats me to it!

I'm soon to leave Essex for Suffolk (temporarily, before a move to France in 2017), so Wally's is good for me along with the Blue Egg at Bardfield, Maglia Rosso near Bury St Edmunds, Greensted Green Farm near Halstead, Spencer's at Wickham St Paul's. I'll add others as I think of them! All I need is a weekend off...

Hooray, yet another mid-Essex thread (can you see what I did there?). Never mind trying to get more pages than the "Have you been out?" thread, let's go for world domination, one thread at a time

I imagine that forward planning is allowed so I was wondering if anyone was planning on attending Mighty Oak's annual free beer tasting event on Saturday 6th December?  Last year we had breakfast on a barge moored alongside Maldon's Hythe.

Yes I'll be going to the Mighty Oak, but I have a commitment to a Flitch Saturday ride first, so will come on after elevenses. Soupy + co will be going by internal combustion powered armchairs.  ::-)

Some more breakfast suggestions for the list:

The Temeraire [Wetherspoons] in Saffron Walden, Café Mocha, also in SW

Two in the Maltings, Sawbridgeworth: Riverside Café and The Shed

Bretts Farm Bistro, White Roding [once went there on New Year's day with Flitch Bikes - just about the only place I could find open for breakfast - it was very good, but quite up-market prices]

Hatfield Heath Café

Loads of likely ones in Burnham-on-Crouch - several pubs do breakfast, plus the Cabin Dairy cafe. I went to the Tall Green House café in the High Street recently

There's a new cafe in West Mersea - the Gilt Rooms - as well as the existing ones.

Harwich is another good option.

In an unexpected, but not unwelcome turn of events, you'll find me and Fred (plus quite a bit of the Flitch Way) at the Spa Road roundabout at 8am Sunday morning if anyone fancies joining me.

The plan thereafter is to ride around randomly following one's nose for two and a half hours and then meet my WAG at Witham 'spoons for a spot of breakfast at 10:30.

Wanna come too?  WAGs and small people welcome too.

Will one's WAG be breakfasting?
No, she has to go to work and breakfast would finish too late to leave after.

Last time the Chelmo CTC tried Roundbush they were not very cycle group friendly so we abandoned in favour of Fig Tree in Maldon.

Greensted Green farm shop is good

I'll did through my CTC rides - as we know, they may go slow, but they know all the good lanes & coffee stops :)

The Roundbush has had a change of owner. I've been a couple of times and it has been fine.

The Roundbush has had a change of owner. I've been a couple of times and it has been fine.

This was in June this year, apparently it would be a 40 minute wait to serve us, but others were walking in and being served.  I think on that basis its off the CTC ride list for a while... might be fine for single/couple of cyclists, but this was only 6 of us or so.

Anyhow, some places (first two are my fav's):

Greenstead Green, Farm Shop
High Easter, The Snug
Takeley, Café Park
White Roding, Bretts Garden Centre
Maldon, The Fig Tree
Coggershall, West Street Vineyard
Stansted Mountfitchet, Café Yoemans
Assington, Assington Farm Shop
Great Braxted, Lillys Nursery (Toms Farm Shop, Maldon Road)
Abridge, Bridge Deli
Regards,

Joergen

This Saturday morning it's the Mighty Oak beer tasting, as you all probably know/are going to, but there is also the SPOCO South-East cycle-jumble at Leaden Roding village hall. It starts at 9 [setting up from 07:30] and goes until 12:30. I'm leading the club run there for elevenses/second breakfast - they do a good bacon sarnie.

I'll be lugging panniers in case I spot a bargain: there are usually books, clothing etc as well as bike bits and complete machines.

The barge cafe opens at 10am, details HERE and the beer tasting commences at 11am, details HERE.  So shall we meet at the barge?

I was thinking of setting off from Witham at about 9am for a circuitous pootle to Maldon if anyone fancies riding over with me.

If I am over my inconvenient bout of man flu (now interfering with my enjoyment of various off sites), I might leave early and head to Spa for 9.
