Signs of Spring
« on: 05 February, 2010, 05:16:53 pm »
Thursday: two collared doves mating in the walnut tree.

Yesterday: skylark soaring and singing its heart out near South Hanningfield.

Today: a primrose in flower in our garden.

Shorts ! It was -6 here yesterday morning at 8:00am.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

As we cycled through the lanes yesterday I was struck but the amount of birdsong we heard.  Lots and lots of snowdrops of course and daffodils making a bid for freedom from the frozen ground.

I saw some ducks acting funny yesterday, would they be doing mating stuff about now?

They were pet ducks, plain and dark but not bog standard ducks. They were waddling and trying to be as tall as possible was what I could see as we went past. The impression I got was they wanted to impress one particular duck with their tallness.

No lambs but lots of very pregnant sheep were also seen. They were taking the weight off their feet and having a good lie down.

Some chap on R4 last night was saying that as most things have held back this year due to the extended cold weather, they will all set off together and very quickly when it warms up.

Should be quite spectacular.

I remember 20 something years ago my dad being incredulous that daffodils were in flower in time for St. David's Day. In more recent years it has become commonplace.

I will be surprised if we have any daffodils in flower n Southend by mid-March. There's no sign of any more than the tiniest shoots at the moment - and no sign of any warm weather to make them grow.

Daffs? DAFFS? No sign of Daffs in Norfolk - not even shoots. We've only just got Snowdrops.

Small birds are in fine voice, but the ice on my pond is still three inches thick, as it has been since a week before Christmas.

This winter has been quite unlike any I remember since we moved here in 1991.

Our pond re-iced the other day.  Now it's melted we've had the rather sad task of fishing out the pond life that didn't survive the winter - a frog and two of our fish. Still, it looks like most of the fish have survived and that's pretty good going in a small pond with such cold weather - and lots of the fish are tiny babies that were born last summer.

On the RSPB trip to Blashford Lakes, Ringwood over the weekend (seriously recommended reserve by the way).
Two great crested grebes beginning their courting display.
Two mute swans ditto.
