Hi all - being quite technophobic, I can't work out how to upload pictures to this site. I click on the 'Insert image' icon, but then nothing appears to invite me to upload an image from my computer.
Any advice gratefully received - then I'll hopefully eventually show you my bikes....Ta! :)
-
Thanks rr - don't know how I missed that on the search.
Ah well, all a bit too technical for me I'm afraid. I'll just have to stick to text.
-
Ah well, all a bit too technical for me I'm afraid.
No it's not if you take it one step at a time.
1. Create a free account at Photobucket: https://secure-beta.photobucket.com/register
2. Upload a photo to your Photobucket account.
3. View your photo at Photobucket.
4. Find and copy the IMG code link.
5. Paste the link here.
(It doesn't have to Photobucket).
-
I managed it, and I'm not good with babbage engines.

Given how often this comes up, worth a seperate sticky?
(I find it a bit of a battle, even knowing that it's in the FAQ somewhere! )

Go to the photo on Flickr, click share and copy the BB code in the box. You will end up with something like this.

^ Got that via viewing the full size photo, then right-clicking to copy image location URL: http://ridewithgps.com/photos/large/876897.jpg
I think a URL must be suffixed with .jpg (or dot other-image-format) for the image to appear on this forum, to explain why http://ridewithgps.com/users/251856#photos/910917 didn't work.
^ That by copying the above URL and amending the number.
-
(http://ridewithgps.com/users/251856#photos/910917)
That's not a link to a photo. You need to open the photo in the site, right click on it and select 'Copy photo URL'. That will give you something like this (note the .jpg file extension).
http://ridewithgps.com/photos/large/876897.jpg
Paste that in img tags, hence:

Hello!
Why can't users post photos directly from their PC?
Does anyone know of a photoblog site that doesn't demand you hand over all rights to your photos in return for setting up an account?
Pete
-
Hosting photos on the server would involve much, much higher bandwidth, CPU, storage and therefore cost than this server (supported and maintained by voluntary contributions) can provide, that's why in common with just about every similar site, photo hosting has to be elsewhere on the web.
There will be someone along in a moment to talk about Dropbox, Google photos allows you retain copyright over your photos and share exactly what you want. In fact, I suspect that most other than Flickr, facebook, Pintrest and the like which try to make money out of your photos are similar.
-
Thanks, I'll have a look.

That's better didn't presst the image tab this time :)
-
Linking from Dropbox seems rather temperamental. The only successful way seems to open the image in Dropbox; right click; copy the image address and paste between the "img" tabs, but don't add ".jpg" to the end of the link.
Any thoughts?
-
For Dropbox, you can click the share button then "Get link". Then edit that link to add ?raw=1 to the end.
Then that will be the direct link to the image file, so it will work in the img tags.
-
I used photobucket app copy photo text to clipboard and paste here, didn't use the image tab :)

I know this thread is old but is there a way to just wave a Polaroid at my P.C. and have it uploaded? I am prepared to hold the Polaroid close to the P.C. for a maximum of 15 seconds, anything longer and it will all seem too much faffing..........................
-
Nope. That's why I fail to post images. :(

Ok I have some pics up on Flickr which does not seem to give the right click for the URL. So... I highlighted the info in the address bar and that gives this:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/61480276@N04/37481502482/in/dateposted-public/
If I then click the infamous image button I get this: FFS.. should have been ithe bracket and the img img
So I then do this: argh the preview shos it but not the post... it should be the bracket and img then the link then the bracket and img.
And am left as usual a bit disappointed. What please is not happening as it should? That image is shrunk by Irfanview to something in the order of 400 x 500 ish.

PH, In Flickr, bring up the photo and click/tap the "Share" thing to the right of, and slightly below, the image. Choose "BBCode", copy the link and paste it into yacf. NB: the "copy" stage doesn't work if using Chrome on an iPad.

Adding to that, I don't think i've run into the pixel limit
Inline images are limited to 640x640 pixels.
so that bit of info might be out dated.
I host images on Google Photos whichy has an annoying "feature" that linked pictures are only visible to other users if they're logged in to Google. There's a neat workaround:
Go here https://www.labnol.org/embed/google/photos/ (https://www.labnol.org/embed/google/photos/) and paste the shareable link from Google photos into the box, click the button, then paste the resultant url inbetween [img] tags on here.
For an embeddable url from Dropbox, upload your image to your Dropbox account, grab the share link, paste it between [img] tags and edit it slightly, changing the final "dl=0" to "raw=1". No, I don't know why, I'm just repeating what I've been told.
-

The forum sets the display size to 640 pixels. You can still use a higher resolution image, it just won't show any bigger (and will use more bandwith etc). Though you could click on it to view it full size, depends on your browser.
For sharing pictures. I think easiest option is Imgur. It gives you the BBcode, so you can just copy that.
-
Imjur for me, would be better if this forum used an efficient form of image capture. Only started to upload pics as i am bored being locked up and not interested in cycling the same boring routes.

Here's another workaround, up to you to decide which you prefer. (my method sounds worse than it is in practice, honest)
Create a google blogger.com account if you don't have one, and create a draft post in a blog.
"Insert picture" in the edit window and you will get the choice to select from google photos, which will display in reverse chronological order.
Select your photo with the default display options. You will have lines something like this in the post
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MpKwX-VVAJc/YFDe-zJD_eI/AAAAAAADZh8/UUluYqEFJpUk7ASqVZM2rtQotW1RazL9QCPcBGAsYHg/s4032/PXL_20210304_183447936.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MpKwX-VVAJc/YFDe-zJD_eI/AAAAAAADZh8/UUluYqEFJpUk7ASqVZM2rtQotW1RazL9QCPcBGAsYHg/s320/PXL_20210304_183447936.jpg"/></a></div>
Select the bit I have highlighted in blue and paste into the image tag and use that (it's an image link using the blogspot.com url). You can also change the loading image size at this stage (which is what makes it particularly useful), the "s4032" bit refers to the long side size of the image, by default the maximum image size. You can change this to whatever - s640 would scale to 640, the maximum default display size, but a larger number like s1024 will allow the reader to click for a bigger image.
-
For sharing pictures. I think easiest option is Imgur. It gives you the BBcode, so you can just copy that.
Flickr does that too, with the caveat that the copy bit is b0rked on older versions of iOS. Doesn’t work on my old iPad Mini but does on this 'ere newer one.

Is there an optimum size for posting on the forum?
Occasionally someone will comment 'can't see your picture - huge file.'
It seems that iPhone photos might be anything between 1.5Mb and 6Mb
I've been compressing them lately by 50% https://compressjpeg.com/ (https://compressjpeg.com/) *
but only down to 1.5Mb prior to posting.
* this software offers compressed image as .jpeg .png .gif or .pdf
-
There are two aspects to file size - the level and type of compression, and the image size in pixels.
For here (YACF), no more than 1024 pixels wide is usually fine - unless the image has lots of detail necessary.
Your latest image is 3,024 x 4,032 pixels, so 9 times too big for what is needed. It is 2MB, and I reduced it to 340KB by reducing the pixel width to 1,024 - see below
If you don't have software to reduce the size of the images, have a look at how you are scanning them. Reduce the scanning resolution. Image sizes are a bit of a dark art - seemingly impenetrable, but easy once you know how and if you have the right software.

So, Jaded, good morning !
This is the next screen I get on hosting the image on https://imgbox.com/ (https://imgbox.com/)
100x100pixel square up to 800x800 pixel square or
100x100pixel resized up to 800x800 pixel resized
I thought choosing the lowest pixel size 100x100 was the way to go?
what should I choose ?
-

Consider that most people are browsing the forum on a screen or window that's of the order of a thousand pixels across. (Maybe smaller for phones, much bigger for high-spec desktops.) A 100 pixel square is about a tenth of that size, which is either going to appear a little on the small side or lacking in detail if zoomed to fill the screen.
IIRC the forum defaults to 640 pixels wide for inline images, so for best results you want the closest size up from that. 800 pixels would be ideal. 1000pixels would be reasonable. 4000pixels would be wasteful.
-
OK, you are on a Mac, so you have the tools already...
(I am assuming that you upload the images somewhere for the hosting - this will make the images a sensible size for that)
Preview will do what you need, it is a very versatile tool!
I'll do it step-wise, so apologies if it is teaching you to suck eggs. I'll use the latest beach one as the example.
With the original image, Kx01lIyu_o.jpg in Finder - Right or CTRL Click on the Image and choose Open With > Preview
When Preview opens it will show the whole image. There are now two steps:
1) Resize it to a more appropriate size for the forum
Tools : Adjust Size
Choose Fit into: 1024 x 1024
Click OK
2) Save it as a new file
File : Export
Export As: type in the name you want, and choose the location
Choose Format: JPEG
Choose Quality: about 80% of the way across
Click Save
That is the file for you to upload. It won't need any changes.
-

On that upload page, you could choose the option for 800x800. Then on the next page, click the option for 'Thumbnails'. That means it will give you BBcode for smaller version for the forum page, plus it will link to the full-rez version. So anyone can click on it if they want to view it bigger.

Oh, and the photo URL needs to be inside [ img ] [ /img ] (without the spaces): clicking the Mona Lisa above the reply box will put those in automatically.

Wonderful, thank you so much. It's not exactly quick, is it, but I'll get a process going and then you can see all my recent tour pictures in Ride reports. Don't hold your breath.

Actually, posting from Facebook rather than from Google Photos in the same way generates a shorter url which is a bit easier for me as I'm replicating a series of Facebook posts.
