Cycling World Magazine
« on: 10 July, 2008, 06:14:08 pm »
So, I'm now sitting on the 18.04 from Motherwell back to Edinburgh, with a new magazine to read as I couldn't find the CW thing.

It's 'Cycling World' and its dated September 2007.  Whoo Hoo!  That newsagent had to hang on to his stock for a while to get a sale!  There is still one left if anyone wants one.

Does this still exist, though?  Website is 'live' but the online shop is 'closed'.

 ???

Considering he would normally just tear off the cover and get his money back at the end of the month, holding on to it for so long demonstrates remarkable determination and patience. ;)

AFAIK this mag has just about lurched along for the last couple of years ... with loooong articles about corduroy shorts and beards .... I had a sub about 4 years ago but think I got 7 of the 12 issues I paid for - didn't renew, obviously.

Sadly, it's probably time that the publisher put it out of it misery

I have a subscription!  I used to read it avidly years ago, when Arnold Robinson and Albert Winstanley would provide articles on touring in Scotland or Yorkshire or the Peaks or wherever - often roughstuff - and relate tales of the many characters in cycle touring.

It's a good read, but if you just wanna know what the latest bling carbon/Ti seatbolt or whatever is, stick to C+

I get every issue via  an arrangement with local Texaco garage :o

I prefer it to C+:it is less "race & commercialism" than C+ which I buy intermittently of late.

I also think the CTC organ(wait for it...wait for it) Cycle is an improvement on what it was a while ago.

I love cycling world. It's about the kind of cycling that I'm interested in and doesn't bother with fashion. It's a magazine that drinks real ale and wears socks with it's sandals. :D

I remember it from many years ago - I can distinctly recall reading articles and feeling astounded at the idea of nipping out on your bike after tea and then riding all night to come home for breakfast, having covered about 200miles.  All the articles in 'those days' seemed to require that you did this at least once a year.

I was very surprised to see it again - and a sept 07 cover date certainly didn't reassure me it was still alive!

I remember when I were a lad CW was a newspaper type thing about the size of today's Guardian that was folded in half and had a colour picture on the front of bearded and plus four'd men on bikes pointing into the middle distance.  There were long and digressive touring accounts within (I remember Robinson and Winstanley, the Wainwrights of cycling) and occasional reviews of the latest Dawes Galaxy and the merits of three-speed hubs against deralieurs.

Even then it seemed a bit of a throwback to a mid-war cycling paradise but accounts of heroic rough-stuff adventures spurred a youthful me to drag my "racing" bike (outfitted with 700x28C tyres) where nowadays there would be insistence on full-suspension MTBs with 26x2.0" tyres and helicopter back up as an absolute minimum.

It didn't seem right when they adopted a more "magazine" like format.

I last bought Cycling World from Smiths in Monmouth in January 1989.  I went in at the weekend, and there it was on the shelf.  I had to buy it :)

I'm not sure it's a great buy in terms of interest/£  but it does have a picture of Dave Pilbeam :)

Good grief! I've just googled them and they seem to have a website! Not sure whether it's made of tweed and has a beard, a three-speed hub gear and a Brooks saddle, tho'

Seriously, it looks like they have some relationship with Sustrans these days.

Welcome to the Cycling World Website

In the last couple of weeks I've looked for this in smiths in Brighton, Victoria, Paddington and Bath and not seen it. At least now I know it's not died.  >:(

quote on dynamo lights from Dec/Jan issue:-
"few will allow anything near the output of high power rechargeable units",
with a photo of an ancient-tech Basta or similar, plus a Shimano hub

The competing rechargeable units reviewed are:
a) Sigma Mirage 5/10W dual halogen lead acid
b) Electron 5/10W dual NiMh halogen
c) Light & Motion Stella LED (£199) (he likes this one - I'd guess it might be the 200 model).

Obviously they keep up with the times (NOT).

I'm very tempted to subscribe for 3 issues for a pound for a nostaglia hit (sounds like street sellers of "sports socks" from the same era).

I found this lurking in the local WHSmith. I only picked it up for the JoGLE on a Quad.

I used to have a friend who was of similar age, only you wouldn't know it. He had a collection of stationary engines, which I was kind of enthused about, albeit not to the same extent he was.

Stationary engines are mainly a passion for golden oldies, and reading CW reminds me of reading the Stationary Engine magazines.

You have to read the words slowly for full effect! :o)

I'm a bit dumbstruck by some of the throw away remarks written in there though. Are bicygnals really a good idea?

It must be said though, the ride reports are quite readable and I do enjoy the perspectives offered.

Just acquired the current edition so there'll be no work done for a couple of hours. :demon:
It never ceases to amuse me that I acquire one of my favourite cycling magazines from a petrol station :)

I've struggled to find one for a while.  WH Smiths in Balham is the best bet, but they've not had one the last few times I've been in :(
