What happened to all the grey squirrels in Sussex?
« on: 26 October, 2014, 04:19:05 pm »
Yesterday Nikki, Clarion, Butterfly (carrying Nye) and I walked from the camp site by the A21 to Bewl Water, a distance of almost 3 miles. On the way I collected a pocked full of sweet chestnuts. Some of these I teased from their bright-green-hedgehog casings with my boots, others were just lying around.

Squirrels haven't mastered the art of opening sweet chestnut casings as they are jut too spiky. However, in Essex, where there are also plenty of sweet chestnut trees, there are loads of grey squirrels and any loose nuts are hoovered up very quickly. Yesterday we didn't see any squirrels at all whereas on a walk in the Essex countryside there would have been lots.

The chestnuts are now roasting in the oven. I haven't heard any explosions yet. I did take the precaution of puncturing each one with a carving fork, but in my experience that doesn't always allow the egress of all teh water vapour produced.

Picked up 3.5kg of chestnuts at our usual tree in the Chilterns a week or so ago.

Ignored by everyone else using the adjacent National Trust car park.

We used to have loads of sweet chestnut trees in the Tees Valley when I was wardening.  They don't usually fruit at this latitude though.  I wonder if they did this year.
Milk please, no sugar.

Most years we don't get much of a crop round here. The "hedgehogs" usually contain just three empty shells. I think this year has been quite good though: warm and not too dry. In fact, there are signs that the nuts have expanded after having ripened, judging by the number of splits in the shells. Those I saw in Sussex were better, I think, than any I have seen in Essex, though.

Always leave one unpunctured to serve as a timer.

Agreed. I want to know what Sussex did to them so that we in Essex can do the same.

A question I was asking myself just yesterday, on a brief cycle Sunday morning. Where are the little hoppy things, that always wait until you're almost in line with them, and then dash out in the road across your path. But very few squirrels around it would appear.

Very odd.

Brighton area.
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

Sent them to France?  I've seen a couple here this year for the first time ever. Still got lots of reds, though.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight
