Melbourne death flu

BBC NEWS | Health | Flu 'heading for nine-year high'

Looking as bad as 1999/2000 (when I had hallucinations with it and everything).  I paid for a vaccination this year.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

"Professor John Oxford suggests people stop kissing and hugging, and cough into their elbow"

WTF? This chap clearly doesn't go near children or walk about in public places!

So is that why I've had evil yellow nasty coming out of my nose for the last fortnight and my tissue consumption is currently responsible for half a giant redwood a week?

I'm here, trying hard to peddle flu jabs to people at risk.

It's a marvellous, evidence-based prevention.

There's flu on the rampage.

There's no side-effects to the vaccine.

It takes about five minutes.

And they still don't come! :o

Just a word on antivirals:  They're almost completely useless.

Hmm..

I've never (pausing to touch fake wood on desk) had flu, but I did have a flu jab once.

I felt shit unwell for a couple of days immediately afterwards - might be coincidence, but I never went back for another one.

I can confidently say it was coincidence.  It's not a live vaccine.  Or it could be that placebo works both ways.

Side effects of the inactivated/dead flu vaccine injection are:

    * mild soreness
    * redness
    * swelling where the shot was given
    * fever
    * aches

These problems usually begin soon after the injection, and last 1–2 days.[52]

Trivial side effects.  A bit of redness and feeling a bit wobbly?

If those are genuine concerns, you've never had the flu.

(we get the jab at work, yay NHS!)
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

I don't wanna go to the doctor's for a jab, I might catch something off all the ill people in the waiting room ;)

But srsly, what you need to do is take it to the masses. Have a couple of stalls in your local shopping centre, probably get lots more take up then

Unfortunately the only year I was offered a free jab from work I turned up to the OH centre only to be told that they'd just run out, despite me being booked in.  >:(
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

No need to pretend those side effects don't exist, then, or to blame the patient for imagining it.

We get offered it at work, and this year I took it up, which I'm quite glad about given the news about a high number of cases this season.  Yes I felt a bit crap the next day.

In a perfect world...

As it is, it's free for the young, old, vulnerable (if you have asthma your GP will offer you the flu jab, for example, because you're already a wheezy get) and healthcare staff, which gives the best cost/benefit.

When I was involved in the campaign for a PCT, we did just that - took a bus to the car park of some supermarkets.  Good take up, but difficult logisitics.  A Practice can't do that.  And our PCT doesn't.

Should little kids have the vaccine? I have been pondering it for the small one, but the news only ever mentions old people as the group that should have it. (I'll state up front that I have done zero research on this.)

Not really much use for kids.  Target groups are over 65s and those with long term conditions.

JC has been offered a jab every year of his life but due to him being phobic of all things 'medical' we have never managed to get him to the surgery.

I think he is offered it due to his heart/lung problems.

I thought some people were advocating it for kids as they are often the ones who spread the bugs...
