Don't forget to ride your bike, people do!!!

I did last time and lost enough fitness to decide to DNS the ride.

What? You DNS'ed after completing an SR, booking accommodation, booking ferries/trains, arranging leave/holiday? Suspect not just 'fitness loss' and 'not riding bike' in play for you four years ago.

The not riding your bike is far more common then people think, mr bunkers story is not that unusual.

Wonderfully Wessex is the obvious antidote to 'not riding your bike':

True. My mojo disappeared at the same rate as my legs. Had a nice relaxed cycling tour in France instead.

  • how do I mount the backup light?

the bike I'm using doesn't have a great way to mount a spare light.  I have ordered some sugru

Front or rear?
I wouldn't mount a rear backup light - I'd take a compatible (identical) one but keep it securely packed away in my luggage.  A mounted spare is vulnerable.
At the front I would mount the light, because its usefulness as an extra light outweighs everything else.

it's the front light and the problem is now resolved as I have found one of my commuting lights mounts on the  front fork nicely

So how good is the Ultrasun suncream? Is it really once a day application? It's not cheap but if folk reckon it's worth it then I'll cough up. Thanks

Did you eat all the (pork) pies before the wheel went?

Ha, I've been quoted 3-4 weeks for a recumbent frame build.  In theory it'd be soon enough to build it up for PBP. But I'm assuming it'd be longer and have no plans to switch from road bike this time round. Meanwhile I'll get on with building the wheels for the new recumbent.

On my TO DO is to find wider, spd 2 bolt shoes. Can anybody recommend?

I'm considering Shimano RT5
I saw that Bont vaypor G stand as good wide comfortable shoe, but also it is 3 times more than shimano....

Now I have Northware but I'm still recovering from numbness and hot foot from last 600k audax :)

Sidi Dominator come in a wide option.

Second vote for Sidi.

I don't have Sidi MTB shoes but the wide version of the road shoes almost completely solved the nerve damage my flipper width left foot was experiencing.

Ultrasun and P20 are both similar.  They "react" with the skin in some way.  They are good until the next time you shower with soap.  I have used Ultrasun lots of times and it works

I prefer Ultrasun because it doesn't stain clothing as much.  I think originally also Ultrasun did a SPF20 or 30 or 50 and P20 just did a 20 :) . I think P20 do other grades now

Yes, P20 can be had in SPF 30 and SPF 50.  I use the SPF 30 and it does a good job. Think the advice is to apply it 20 mins before exposure to sun. Been a while since I read the instructions though.

I liked P20 but I found Calypso after that - applies more like an alcohol hand gel than a liquid. Was available in Aldi for a while but haven't seen it there lately. On Amazon for ~£7 a bottle. It's the least sticky all day suncreen I've found and I think it's less staining than P20.

Miles cycled 2014 = 3551.5 (Target 7300 :()
Miles cycled 2013 = 6141.4
Miles cycled 2012 = 4038.1

Fit new cleats as yesterday's ride revealed they are due replacement.

Calypso is excellent. Wilko stock it, £6 a bottle.
