Ms AWL: I'm sorry you don't like the flight times on the trips I booked. However, funds are short these days and (crazily) it was >£400 cheaper to fly you with Lufthansa to BHX from Budapest via Munich. Yes, you'll have to fly at 06.45 from Budapest, but surely the knowledge that I don't have to drive to Luton or Heathrow - only a 20-minute drive to BHX - and subsequently have a lie in is some sort of compensation.  :demon:

Were you like that at 12, Kim?

Probably, yes, if I'd been left to my own devices.  I certainly used to illicitly read well into the early hours[1] at that age, though unsurprisingly more traditional homework and bed times were enforced until I was about 14.

Looking back, I think my parents were generally happy to leave me to my own devices with that sort of thing (I would have done my homework anyway because I was scared of my teachers, not because of my parents), but would make rules that applied to both of us for the benefit of my (younger and much more rebellious) brother.  It was a lot easier to get him to do homework (or got to bed) if I could be seen to be doing the same.

[1] An important part of growing up, that.  IMHO.

10pm is a bit late at 12 - but it depends. I'd say it's late to be starting an hour's homework, but not late to be starting 30min work.

*definitely* it's a good idea to work on the 'delayed gratification' thing; where we do the activities we enjoy and put off the ones we don't like. This applies to homework, and it is a revelation to most kids when they discover they can race through work if they only have 40 min in which to do it before Strictly Come Dancing starts on the telly.

It seems we have a product called Foglight®.  Apparently "Foglight is an application monitoring solution that helps your organization monitor and control the performance of your mission-critical enterprise applications".  It keeps sending me Babbage-Posts, the contents of which were clearly programmed by Ricky Gervais on an off-day.

Slave trader,

Systems Integration specialists are not the same as software engineers. I fall very squarely into the latter category - please don't send me a promising looking job spec for the latter when the organisation in question  are clearly looking to hire the former. Guess I won't be sneaking into the inner sanctum to peek at the writings of Aleister Crowley after all ....

I just rode 2 miles to the surgery with suspected cracked rib to pick up prescription. They were closed for training. Had to console myself with tea and cake at the Village Centre coffee shop. Arrived home just before it rained, and just too late to get the dryish washing off the line

On the plus side, I cycled 4 miles in the dry, had tea and stickies for £1.80 and laughed at the motorists-speeding-towards-a-speed-trap situation en route  :D. Good luck with your speed awareness course guys.

Bah, it's just one thing after another. Now our boiler won't go woosh when we turn the thermostat up. T'stat clicks but boiler just sits there like a lemon. Kicks in just fine when I put the hot water on though... and the three upstairs radiators get hot with the hot water on but not the downstairs ones.

Bah, I have a cold and I'm all grumbly now. Warm at least from running up and down the stairs pressing buttons and poking radiators.  ::-)

Had almost the same thing at Pingu Towers tonight. Eventually it started cooperating but I don't know why, but I'm glad it did.

Now the bloody PVR just turned itself off and it's lost all the channels and can't seem to find them again :(
I can see this being an expensive week.

Think it might be the thermostat, as boiler and pump in airing cupboard kick in when hot water turned on at timer but neither work when water off and heating on. Not sure though, don't know whether to get a man in or pick up a cheap thermostat to try and fit myself and then GAMI if that doesn't work.

Tesco. I quite like your Tiger bread. I like it even more when it's half price and therefore 50p for an enormous loaf. But... could you make it a little more... toaster shaped?

I know why Saino's were offering Sure Quantam antiperspirant in a cheap deal, it's because it's like covering your armpits in Spray Mount. Ugh.

Oh well, only another ~6 months of use at work to get through the two bloody cans of it I have.

The thermostat's nearly always a simple switch.  In the absence of a multimeter to test it, you could just connect the wires directly together, and if the heating comes on, you know what the problem is.

Mrs B was suddenly & unexpectedly deprived of her main work e-mail account yesterday, the one with all the other NHS staff on & which therefore recognises their names. She also has a social services e-mail account, but there's hardly anyone in the address book she needs to e-mail.

Because this happened via the disabling of her NHS user ID, she also lost access to all the clinical record keeping tools, etc.

A large number of other people are also affected.

This is because her trust is migrating accounts in the most incompetent, cocked-up, arse-over-tit way imaginable.

She rang the trust IT helldesk, & spoke to someone with an impenetrable (to her) Indian accent, an apparently poor command of English, who was in a very noisy room, & who had no knowledge of the different organisations whose e-mail & user accounts are subsumed under the trust IT. He kept asking her which hospital she worked for, & couldn't grasp the idea that there are people in the trust who aren't linked to hospitals.

This really deserves a full-on rant, but I'm now so used to the fuckwittery of NHS management that I'm too weary for that.

I was considering this, and was going to post on here asking if that was wise. I know electrickery is quite simple really but was drummed into me as a kid not to take any risks.

How do I know which wires to connect, particulary as I don't have the manual/fitting instruction for the thermostat?

Saying that I do have a multimeter, just remembered I got one for my birthday. Grandad was right, the do come in useful. What setting should I use/what should I poke.

Cheers in advance for any help/advice.
