« on: 10 May, 2020, 11:07:57 am »
The Garmin 830 appears to have a choice of settings

GPS
GPS & GALILEO
GPS & GLONASS

my question is which is best setting to choose?

Changing the Satellite Setting
For increased performance in challenging environments and faster GPS position location, you can enable GPS + GLONASS or GPS + GALILEO. Using GPS and another satellite together reduces battery life more quickly than using only GPS.

Select Menu symbol > Activity Profiles.
Select a profile.
Select GPS Mode.
Select an option.

Never had an issue with "just" GPS. Maybe when in densely forested or high-rise urban areas using a dual setup would be of benefit.

Depends whether you want the Americans or the Russians or Ursula to know where you are.

The satellites don't know the location of the receiver.

There's no data sent back up from the receiver to the satellites; it's all one-way timing info broadcast from the satellites to all the receivers that can see it, each receiver then calculates it's location based on the timing data from multiple satellites.  Only the receiver knows it's location ( and anyone it passes the location on to in the case of smartphones ).

FWIW, I've never bothered to enable anything other than plain old vanilla GPS.
There's not a benefit to me to outweigh the additional battery drain.

I've found some improvement in precision from enabling GLONASS on my eTrex in That London.  It's an eTrex, so I'm not fussed enough about battery drain to turn it off.

Yep, that’s the joke (except for conspiracy theorists)
