I used to follow the NFL but they've added more teams since then - the Commanders are new to me but they seemed the most likely candidate of the remaining words. Quinn and the non-American spelling of Grey were the ones that tipped me off what the blue group might be.

I spotted that the four "purple" words had only one vowel, an "i", but didn't think about the extension of that point, into Roman numerals. I left "Holland" out of the EU countries by chance, and it was only then that I started to google people with a first name of Tom. I found a Tom Dill in Wikipedia as well, so that wasn't entirely helfpul. I'd heard of Tom Cruise, but none of the others.
