Shimano road/mtb hub compatibility
« on: 11 September, 2014, 02:09:52 pm »
tried to google but haven't found anything so far. my question is - can i use shimano mtb hub rear axle and a 5mm spacer on the nds to make road hub (e.g. ultegra, 105..) fit in 135mm wide frame?

The question is, *which* mtb hub?

Some of the mtb hubs use odd-sized axles (but I think those are the exotics).

Older model Deore etc should work just fine. You'll need to use the cones and locknuts from the road hub and only substitute the axle (plus spacer).

Yes (for older MTB axles), though I have managed to add spacers to the existing axle with less protrusion.

thanks. yes, the older and same vintage hubs like deore m525 axle into, say, 105 5600.

It is possible in some circumstances to put an mtb 135 axle into a 130 hub.    You have to match up carefully but I have seen an Ultegra hub with a 135mm XT axle.

Does this have any advantage over using a MTB hub ?
Do you have the 130mm hub that your trying to use, is that it ?

I've done this so I know it works. It was a lower end hub (probably Sora) from 15 or so years ago.

imo road hubs are better looking and lighter, also i have the right length spokes to build wheels using road hub. the frame is steel, so it can be easily cold set to accommodate either hub, which i'll probably do rather than faffing with axles/spacers.
