It seems bikes were the mass transport in, judging from the clip, the 1930s - I don't think that was the case in Britain. And then they lost that but reacted much more boldly to the oil crisis of the 70s. Perhaps if we hadn't had North Sea oil we would have gone down the same path? Maybe.
