I just wondered if anyone knows anyone who works for Evan's Cycles?

What's the pay like? (minimum wage?)
Is there commission? (I know the staff at halfrauds receive commission for selling extras with new bikes).

I don't know. However, someone did tell me that mechanics in bike shops in London earn around 30K. I'm not sure how true that is.

It's not the pay or commission that I would be concerned about. It's the requirement for a frontal lobotomy in order to work for Evans or Halfrauds that worries me...

Evans aren't that bad, Reg. I've met some pretty knowledgeable people working behind the counter in London stores.

I doubt they pay £30k a year, though

A friend of mine has just been to one of the Evans branches in London for general advice on a new bike. She has some issues with back pain and she was very impressed at the general level of knowledge and advice.

Maffie has been going to Evans in Manchester (Deansgate) and says she has found them to be excellent. Especially as she has been buying things on-line and then returning them to the store when the fit hasn't been right.

When we were bike shopping for Maffie I found them to be very helpful and honest.

30K?

Cut that by more than half, London branches may pay a bit more but 30k is just a silly amount

Its skilled/semi skilled labour, not rocket science

Lets put it this way, I was offered a mechanics job last year with a well known frame builder and it wasnt even half that figure

I am also a good mechanic and not one of the half arsed grease monkeys that Evans branches in london employ, look at the staff turnover rate, if its high you should avoid working there IMHO.

I sent an Evans application off in 2005. The pay was around £12,000ish a year full time in Milton Keynes. I think you get extra for doing repairs but I'm not sure.

30k sounds reasonable for managing a busy store, but you wouldn't get near enough business in most branches to pay that sort of money to mechanics.

Evans are OK, if you're looking for something mainstream (and get the right person).

Not my experience in Manchester Evans.
I guess I got the wrong person.

I asked for a 15mm spanner to remove a wheel and she tried to sell me cone spanners

OK, my friend who has just started working at Evans is on £5.25 per hour (this is a London branch). She's working two days a week. After three months she'll get staff discount on stuff from the shop (which basically means trade price parts). She gets £0.50 for each email address she gets signed up to their mailing list, but she dislikes this part of the job and has avoided getting any email addresses. I'm not sure about commission for selling bikes etc.

£5.25 an hour? Grim. No one can afford to stay on a wage like that for long, hence the high turnover.

Regarding staff, there are some really helpful and knowledgeable ones about. One chap in the Fulham branch in particular.

Evans has a knack of never having what I need: they have the item but never in the right size /length / colour etc.

I find that worrying - bikes, if incorrectly set up or maintaned can get you hurt in a very very bad way

Have Evans ever been sued?
