I think I put them off the scent as I managed to sound like an actor from Solihull.  Where?

First time I went to the USA, I was asked if I was from Russia.

Thought it was accent confusion, but later suspect it was my passport. Red, you see. Only commies have things in red.

I got asked if I was Australian on a number of occasions traveling in Canada and Alaska. I put it down to a decision process of:  Speaks English => Doesn't speak like royalty => doesn't sound cockney => must be from another English speaking country => Probably Australian...

TBF, I wouldn't be able to differentiate between people from widely spaced parts of North America, either.

That survey, though - what tosh! I hail from the same neck of the woods as Ian, and have a North Notts/South Yorks accent (only slightly diluted by 20 years in South Wales!).  The survey's conclusion?  West London.

My Mancunian accept disappeared within 18 months of me being in the RAF. I've now lived longer
away from Manchester than I did in the city. Spending time in different parts of the country

and two periods abroad (in the RAF), has largely made it impossible for people (on first hearing)
me to pinpoint where I'm originally from.

I definitely do not have a local (around here) accent, and have puzzled many Americans who've

heard me speaking with a English accent.

[Edit: Had me sounding like a Londoner: Kate Winslet and nothing like Mancunian: Liam Gallagher]

Apparently I'm from East London. Something/someone else that can't tell the difference between North Kent and East London.

These days I can usually distinguish USAnians from Canuckistanis but unless the USAnian is talking like a bit-part actor from a Martin Scorsese film or Sheriff JD Pepper that’s about as far as it goes.  Although in eastern Washington the phrase “All righty” is used more often than is seemly.  But then again my former The Boss used to say that all the time, and he's from Stevenage.

Ah, but Mr Google already knows you weren’t a member of The Beatles and therefore you cannot possibly be a Scouser.

It got me as right as it could do I suppose. I’m 9 years a manc, with 26 years in Yorkshire and 25 years here in Suffolk. It decided that Yorkshire was the most prevalent component which is fair, though I do take exception at being consider to be Nevill Longbottom.
For every complex problem in the world, there is a simple and easily understood solution that’s wrong.

Hmm Kate Winslet apparently. Given that all my work colleges take the piss out of my North Yorkshire accent that's definitely a highly inaccurate test.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.
