Well, and this is without the aid of fine coffee.

Gaston Plante (like you, I can't do acute accents!) invented the storage battery

Metallica (besides being metal) had an album called Death Magnetic

Karl Wilhelm Siemens invented/developed the open hearth steel-making process (metal and electriciity?) He became a British citizen but I don't know if he changed his name.

Am I getting anywhere?

You are so so near Peter!  I may as well give it to you.

You have the right two names. Gaston Plante AND Karl Wilhelm Siemens developed lead acid batteries.  Mr Siemens not only became a British citizen, anglecising his name in the process but he became Sir Charles William Siemens!

The Metallica bit is slightly out though, I was thinking of a much earlier one which was a song called "Battery"

In what sense is a question about who invented batteries a pop quiz?

Follow the question, dear heart.  The question is not about who invented batteries...

How are Midnight Cowboy and a "celebrity" crop-circle enthusiast connected?

A musical crop circle expert might be Reg Presley, of The Troggs.

His hits included Wild Thing, Love Is All Around, and With A Girl Like You.  I don't think any of those were featured in the movie. :(

Clarion, you've got the Reg Presley bit and you've mentioned a significant song.  Research it a bit and i'm sure you'll get it!

(I did you a "I saw this and thought of you" - did you see it?)

Edit: I see you did!

I've now involved Wikipedia, and saw the answer quite quickly.  Very interesting.  Great trivia.  But it was cheating. :-[

OK!  I'll leave it for a day or so, to see if anyone else has a go, then we can stick the answer up.  Fascinating, as you say!

Well, no one actually got that one, but I came across an interesting piece of trivia which makes a curious question:

Which song namechecks a Caribbean resort, and towns in Surrey and Lancashire (Greater Manchester)?

I really don't think there is more than one such song, and the places are mentioned a few times in the song.

As Clarion says, no-one came up with the answer (except by special research!), so here is the solution:-

Midnight Cowboy featured Jon Voight.  Voight's brother is Chip Taylor, a professional gambler, who also wrote Wild Thing.   Wild Thing was recorded by The Troggs (Andover's answer to a question no-one asked).  Reg Presley was their lead-singer and is a crop-circle enthusiast.

Kevin Bacon.

Clarion, I imaging we've got Fleetwood Mac in here somewhere?  I could google but mercifully my Mac knowledge ends with Peter Green!

Not the mighty Mac, but a seventies pop group from the UK.

Not without cheating I'm afraid! The track was on a vaguely remembered album from 30 odd years ago. I could guess though...Croydon...Guildford...err...

Dorking.  It's quite a tragi-comic song, with a jaunty chorus.

Ah Dorking, pearl of the err... M25. I'm sure I would have got there eventually!

OK here's one. I am not sure how obscure this is  - it may be common knowledge. I saw an obit for the art teacher, incidentally at one point he was mine too, in one of the broadsheets a few years ago.

David Bowie can be linked to the Small Faces via his school art teacher. How?

After two months without a single tentative guess, I'd say that it's almost certain we don't know.

A bit of Wiki-ing gives the answer, though.  Cheating, of course...

As I'm getting a bit bored sitting at home with one foot in the air, I thought I'd resurrect this, starting with an easy one….
