Who wrote Patti Smith's hit "Because the Night" before she rewrote it from a female perspective.

Bingo!

OK, going in a slightly different direction - what problems did the song Wonderwall by Oasis cause guitar shops up and down the country?

Clue: it's not that kids would keep playing it in guitar shops and irritating the piss out of the staff! It's a bit more subtle than that.

More clues if required....

Capo shortage?

Correct! When the song came out every teenage bedroom guitarist wanted to play it, so went out to buy a capo. Many shops couldn't keep up with the demand, so in effect the song caused a national shortage of capos!!  :P

Easy one - you'll either know it or you won't (or Google it, but it'll be on your conscience  :P ):

Whatever happened to... Leon Trotsky?

I assume the Trotsky question doesn't involve an ice pick, but is a reference to a popular song?

The Police (the pop group  ::-)) are widely known for their peroxide blond hair.

They dyed their hair so they could appear in a TV advert for a very, very famous product
and gain some much needed publicity.
This was all before they hit the big time.

What was that product?

As long as you didn't Google it (because if you did, you are going to be doored by the legendary pink Nissan Figaro).

Your turn, Aidan.

No credit to me.  Mrs Aidan, who used to be a member of the Police fan club, knew it as soon as I asked.  Incidentally though, I have seen the Police more times than her.

I still remember reading about them when they first appeared, and then being shocked
that they were his creation.  :o

I'll let someone else take the spoils though.
