I remember seeing / being taken to see that at the cinema in 1975.   Feeling old now.

On a loosely related note, I just showed barakta the skellington fight from Jason And The Argonauts, which she missed out on being creeped out by at a formative age.

The Land that Time Forgot on some random TV channel on Saturday afternoon.

Adapted from an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel
Screenplay by Michael Moorcock
  • Dastardly Germans
  • U-Boat
  • Plucky rescued crew of the ship the U-boat sank
  • Brave hero (Doug McClure - whatever happened to him?)
  • Swooning heroine (Susan Penhaligon)
  • Dinosaurs
  • Neanderthals
  • Volcanoes erupting
  • Polystyrene boulders falling
  • Quicksand
The perfect weekend afternoon film really. Perhaps it could do with a couple of songs and a dinosaur / caveman dance number then it would have everything.
Wait ... what?!? I knew Moorcock was multi-talented, but this is news to me. Doesn't seem like his sort of script ... <googles> ...

"
Quote
The script by Moorcock and [James] Cawthorn was altered extensively by the producers.

... which, to be fair, could mean anything.

Anyway, interesting - but I'd rather watch 'Argonauts, sorry!

Trufax: when Van Der Graaf Generator sang "West is Mike and Susie" in Refugees 'twas Ms Penhaligon to whom they referred.

Penhaligon is a rather splendid name.  Somewhere between a peninsula and a polygon with a whiff of chlorine.

Although beastly Robbie Coltrane used to call D/S Penhaligon "Panhandle" in Cracker.

I was trawling through catch-up TV when I, ahem, came across Channel 5's offering of 'Come Play With Me', a 1977 "sex comedy".

Some formerly big names. A window into a former time.

An utterly unredeemed pile of steaming excrement. It was so bad I felt embarrassed for the UK. It wasn't even bad enough to be funny [/comedy], and as for sex...
[/titillation]

Sound, cinematography, script and, er, acting were all abysmal. Many 'performers' appeared to be pissed. The only thing that kept me skimming through it (I couldn't face actually watching it) was curiosity as to whether it could get any worse.

It could and did.

Channel 5 getting back to their roots, then...

Just seen 24 hour party people.

I hadn't been aware that Alan Partridge was so influential back then.
It is simpler than it looks.

"Three Days Of The Condor".   I'd seen this before & read the original novel (6 Days..) but over 40 years ago....

A decent thriller, well shot & acted.  I found the relationship between Redford & Dunaway rather disturbing though.  He kidnaps her at gunpoint, threatens her, leaves her tied up and she happily falls into bed with him ?  70's I suppose....

True but that is when it was on at the cinema.

Anyway Christmas Eve, as is tradition we will be watching The Muppet Christmas Carol and The Princess Bride.

Christmas Day I will mostly be cooking I expect and dipping in and out of the living room.

Rise of Skywalker. Better than expected and a good way to end it.

Christmas Eve here we've usually had Hogfather.  New Year's Eve we'll probably have The DeadThe Lass of Aughrim has been playing in my head for the last three weeks.

We booked tickets for next week for when we're mouldering post-Christmas for the sake of completeness. I don't have high hopes, the first of this latest clutch was OKishly meh and basically a retread and the second one wasn't interesting enough to remember. It would be nice if they end on a high note (assuming Disney don't decide to squeeze a bit more money out of it). It's a shame, I really enjoyed Rogue One, the rest not so.

Jarheads. Looked like a rebooted Full Metal Jacket cum gung-ho USMC-worship-flick but turned out to be thoughtful and well put together.

6 Underground. Maximum Bayhem. It's very bad. Magnet gag at the end is kinda cool, though.
Hopefully this will be the movie that will finish off his career as a director? (Probably not).

That's a cool title if you're a super-confident director!

'Death of Stalin' now on Netflix.

Such a clever film, billed as a comedy, but the comedy is only funny because of the horror which lies beneath.  Loved the regional accents, which add character to the characters. Beria is cast perfectly.  Michael Palin's inclusion adds more than a tip of the hat to Terry Gilliam's 1984 satire 'Brazil'.
