Quick but interesting Breakfast
« on: 21 November, 2008, 03:46:19 pm »
Any ideas for something a bit different (for me) to the usual toast/weetabix or shredded wheat and tea?  I organise the children for school and time is a tad short.  I probably need to eat more, for a start, as I'm hungry by 11.30am.

What do people eat for a quick breakfast?

Fried egg sandwich

Or more healthily, a foul medames, extremely filling and doesn't actually need cooking as it can be bought canned.  Just add pitta bread, and if you're feeling fancy, tomato, parsley, olive oil, feta cheese and a hard-boiled egg.

I think I could probably manage that. Do you have the instructions?

Museil with fruit (dried apricots? grated apple? chopped up pear or banana?) and yoghurt.

Porridge.  If you mix the milk and oats in evening and leave it in the fridge overnight, it should cook quicker.

I wish I had time for breakfast.

If I eat in the morning I'm always hungry by around 10:30.  If I skip breakfast (as I usually do) I don't feel hungry until 13:00 or later.

They're quite useful for heating Beans prior to a Toast interface, and also for heating a bowl of soup.

I usually have the following

Large handful of spoon sized Shredded Wheat
Decent splosh of soya milk
half a chopped bananna sprinkled with large pinch of ground ginger
Whatever other fruit is to hand chopped up, usually a few strawberries plus blueberries
A few chopped nuts
Topped off with soya yoghourt

I used to have wheetabix whilst waiting for 2 eggs to poach back when I had little time and a huge appetite.

The problem with microwaving them is that they can explode!

Put a bit of hot water in a small bowl, break the egg into it, prick the yolk with a toothpick and microwave. Shouldn't explode.

How does that work then?

Calories in is reduced so there is nothing to build fatness off of.

I'm just a fat bastard because I love HUGE meals with beer and hate Apple  ;)

I think it works like this:

Having skipped breakfast, your body now thinks it's in a famine situation and will adjust your metabolism accordingly -  you're more likely to gorge yourself at lunch and dinner, in order to build up the fat reserves to see you through the lean time.

This is a hangover from coping with the marginal subsistence of our hunter/gatherer existance millennia ago, but of course our bodies haven't yet evolved to deal with the more sedentary modern lifestyle, with a lower calorific requirement.

* Reads from 1970 Biology notebook *

Eating infrequently leads to extremes in blood sugar levels which aren't good for you. Eating frequent small meals from the moment you get going in the morning (roughly 400 calories every three hours works for me, your BMR will vary) keeps your blood sugar, and therefore insulin levels, on an even keel.

Roller coaster insulin/blood sugar levels are disruptive to fat burning, and tend to make you crave poor quality (sugary) carbohydrates.

For scrambled eggs in a microwave?

OK, place eggs, and anything else you want eg salt, pepper, butter, in a jug, and mix them up.  Microwave for a bit (say one or two minutes), stop and mix a bit more, microwave a bit more, stop, and mix a bit more until cooked.

It's a bit dependent on how many eggs, the strength of your microwave, and how "solid" you like your scrambled eggs.  Towards the end you want to stop and mix more frequently, or you'll just end up with a solid lump of mixed up eggs!
Actually, it is rocket science.

Had magnificient Oeufs brouillés au micro-ondes this morning.  ;) Probably saves a bit of time not having to stir on hob continuously, or cleaning the pan.

Something different tomorrow...

vorsprung junior (age 12) is a fussy eater at breakfast time.  But not so for the rest of the meals.  She will eat

1) bacon sandwich
2) soya dessert in a pot.  Won't eat the banana that goes with it
3) mug of cocoa + cossiant
4) plain white toast+butter
5) an orange/satsuma
6) baked beans with grated cheese on top
7) left over mashed potatoes made into fried potato cakes

She will cook 1,4,6 or 7 if she has plenty of time to do it
She will also drink filter coffee and apple juice (applfelsaft) if it is available

She won't eat museili, porridge, most toast, any cereal, scrambled eggs and several other obvious breakfast items

Older mini ao (10) has a virtual phobia about almost all breakfast cereal, and bread with seeds in it.  Fortunately she will eat readybrek (choc), fruit (not bananas), eggs, marmite on toast/with marge.  I tend to make white:wholemeal, 50:50 bread.

This morning I made vorsprung junior a batch of blackcurrant muffins
Cooking muffins at 6am isn't difficult if you have all the stuff ready

Me: "when do I get Nigella's enormous breasts?"
Mrs Vorsprung:" just eat  the muffins everyday and you'll get there"
