I've already ridden some longish rides with Junior #1.
We did the Ullapol sportive ( 134k ) a few years back, when he was 15.

This pretty much wrecked him, on account of the bastard hilly bits.
Junior #2 ( now 16 ) has never done a ride longer that about 26 miles.
Now, we are planning to go visit some family near Elgin. It's 114k by the shortest and least hilly route.
Both Juniors insist they will ride with me.
I've no doubts about #1, but it's going to be a hard shift for #2.
I've been making encouraging sounds, and I plan to make many stops along the way.
So I've spent the evening prepping 3 road bikes for tomorrow's Grand Depart.
We shall see how it goes.

Good luck. No need for any advice, you clearly know the drill. Please report back here when the day is done.

And we made it.
3 set out and 3 finished.

117k. He's pretty knackered.
I planned it with a couple of proper stops: Second Breakfast at Alford, and Lunch at Dufftown after the big hill.
One puncture and one broken chain between us.
( actually, a KMC quick link just vanished! No sign of it on the road. New one fitted and off we went. )
Saw Audaxers on the Rothes Recce going the other way as we were between Dufftown and Rothes.

That's great! Well done all. Feanor, I know you're halfway to Murmansk but those gloves look heavy duty for summer. Is it very cold up there at the moment?
Peter
PS Mind you, red always looks bigger!

I was not far from, but further north than Murmansk this summer, and definitely didn't need gloves, socks or warm jacket.
And well done the Feanors.

Garmin error?

Gulf stream.

Arctic Scandinavia can be *very* warm around the solstice. My traveling companion recorded 28C when he reached the North Cape. (We had parted some way south.)

No, it's not cold.
But I've never got on very well with fingerless gloves.
I find they ride down my fingers till they are jammed uncomfortably between my fingers where they join my hands, and at the same time the open ends have jammed tightly around the circumference of my fingers.
So I tend to wear the same gloves all the time, except in full-on winter conditions, where I use old ski gloves.

Well done Junior2,
I suspect the terrain was the major issue as by his age I was riding those sort of distances on consecutive days with two panniers. However I suspect you were travelling faster than my sister and I.

The 2 juniors are of totally different builds.
The older one is quite strongly built, but #2 is skin and bone.
When he was little, after bath-time, he would scamper about nekkid on all fours, and the likeness to Gollum was uncanny.
He's still the same build ( but we don't see the Gollum-scamperings ).
He struggles on endurance events, because he has no reserves.
Our walk up Half Dome in Yosemite was a real struggle.
Also, he feels the cold easily, which can become an issue when we have -16 days when skiing.
So for him, it was a real achievement, and he's feeling well made up that he's ridden 100k+.
-
Feanor, I didn't mean to belittle the achievement.
That would be a good reason to be very proud of doubling your highest daily milage. We had rather built up with each annual tour increasing the daily distance by 5 to 10 miles.
26 to 70 is a massive step. With a build that is short of energy stores it's even more impressive.
-
Matthew, I didn't interpret your post as belittling in any way. Sorry if my response suggested that.
-
Well done Feanor Family!

Excellent stuff!

From 26 miles to 117km is one massive leap! Very impressive.

Wahey ! Well impressed. Kudos due to Feanor Junior #2.
