Changing Etrex 10 battery without losing track
« on: 24 April, 2016, 04:11:10 pm »
Next weekend I'll be doing my first 400km DIY by GPX recorded on an Etrex 10. A pair of AAs sees me through 300km OK, but my usual 400km time of 22hrs is going to require a battery change.

Do I just turn the Etrex 10 off, swap in new batteries and turn back on? Or do I need to do something explicit to preserve the track before turning off?

If you switch it off, it'll continue recording the same track when you switch back on.  All you'll notice in the track will be that there aren't any points logged while it's off, and maybe a little wibbliness as the GPS accuracy settles down again.  I normally switch my eTrex off for controls so it doesn't log spurious distance from poor GPS signal (though you'll want to not do this if you rely on the overall average speed display).

You can easily test this on a short ride...

Best to swap batteries at a convenient control part way round rather than letting them run flat.  That could lead to file corruption.
