You're not doing that, are you? :o
It's a ride I'd really like to do but the distance from York is just too far for me. Don't change just for me as I'd then have to book trains etc., but I'd vote for Northallerton.
Remember, I'm not a mile crunching hardened faudaxer... ;)
Just registering an interest... would like it if Daisyhill could do this ride.
We're doing Y-L-Y at the start of June thenFlatHoll and Back that weekend.
Any thoughts on Friday 5th July?
Unless there are any major objections, shall we move it to Friday 5th July?
Any thoughts on Friday 5th July?
5th July is free from audax, but I have complex childcare issues that could mean a family outing (me & boab minor onna tandem up that Hill??!!!!) or free & childless. Either way we'd be much more likely, to the point of keen, for that date (assuming we could find accommodation afterwards?).
York without childers, NTR with. So whatever the majority votes on as I really don't know what's going to happen with the offspring visiting the other parent.

Would get my vote, as there's a 100 local to me on the 30th too.
Not that I've looked at trains yet.
Or got any cycling fitness...
Assuming I haven't ditched the 24 plan between now and then, I'm out. I don't think I should miss a night's sleep 2 weeks before the big (and long) day. Have a good ride everyone!

You could come along to the start and scare Kim again!
Wouldnt mind a go at this. Trains are a tad spendy tho'

I'd quite like to do this. It'll be night time, so I won't be able to see the hills.Nice try, but you hit the hills (as it were, I'm not advocating violence-against-landscape) in the early morning, in bright summer sunshine, so every undulation shows its glory.
When we did it a couple of years ago the weather was perfect.
I'd quite like to do this. It'll be night time, so I won't be able to see the hills.
I am tracking tickets. Loadsa is working on new ventures not sure how he will be fixed atm. I could bring car but train makes more sense really. Course on each of the two train sets East Coast use, bike storage is at the opposite ends of each type of train....strewth.
If we went that way, we could leave our calling card at the door of the Thwaite Arms in Horsehouse. I'm sure I could devise something appropriate for the charming gentleman that runs the place.I'd quite like to do this. It'll be night time, so I won't be able to see the hills.
How about this route?
http://goo.gl/maps/E12WR
(only kidding)
I don't think I ever actually got to Tan Hill. I remember doing SCIENCE with some sheep, and next thing I know I was sliding along at speeds in excess of R17 on gravel.

In your experience, what time do you arrive at Tan ill?
We have a group ride planned for the following morning at 7am, starting from toytown - there may be a scheduling clash unless I cycle faster.
The COR is almost entirely downhill, and although terrifying, recedes rapidly in the memory, fading in the blur of excellent-ness that is this ride.

And what time do you think we will be in Darlington. I can't remember from the last time, although I do seem to remember sitting outside a pub drinking, so I must have had time to spare back then.
Would we be doing Girsby in the dark? It's one of my very favourite roads but I do like to be able to see it.
Oh yes, I remember the rush back to Darlington for Doosh's train. That was fun. And obviously left me with time to kill in the pub, too, which was also fun. So maybe a 4pm ish train then- although as Wow already said, the cheap tickets are not available yet.And what time do you think we will be in Darlington. I can't remember from the last time, although I do seem to remember sitting outside a pub drinking, so I must have had time to spare back then.
Good question - I think Kim had a four o'clock train booked two years ago, which meant a relaxed ride back. The earliest train was Doosh's, which was 14.45, and a real rush to catch.
Somewhere around there. Hopefully we'll be earlier at the pub this time..
I can't remember from the last time, although I do seem to remember sitting outside a pub drinking, so I must have had time to spare back then.
Surely, it's no contest.
And the sharks are back:
Second good news: the track from Sleightholme to the Tan Hill road hasn't been resurfaced.
I have booked too. I'm on the cutting-it-fine express which arrives in Northallerton at 23.38, and returning on the 16.26 from Darlington.
I'll sort out a contingency plan in the event of a delay.
I'm booked now! 16.26 going home- 19.30 going up which means I will be in NTR at about 9. So I may well take up your kind offer, tiermat.
I'm already getting excited about this ride. Although, I am expecting rain, wind, sleet and possibly snow. I have just had two weeks of almost unbroken sunshine on Arran, Islay and Cowal (albeit with sub zero temperatures and a biting easterly). That must have used up my sunshine and blue skies quota for the year.
Ok. Is there not likely to be a crowd of folks with bikes on whatever train it is before midnight? Or are people going up earlier?
I might ride it, yes. It'd be less faffy. Not sure I have the time though, and I don't want to tire myself out on the flat boring bit. :P
Arrive NTR 21.38, depart DAR 15.48 sound OK ?
Train tickets direct from here to Northallerton are prohibitively expensive without looking at the return costs. We will have to look at various options... :(
Birmingham New Street - Derby = from £5.50 to £7.00
Derby - Sheffield = £8.00
Sheffield to York = £9.00
Plus £7.20 for the standard walk-up fare from York to Northallerton.
Singles from Darlo to Birmingham on the Saturday afternoon are about £26 - and presumably you could get those cheaper with a few strategic ticket splits.
just seen this ride and i am interested in maybe doing it.
is there a rough idea of a route to look at, and a rough idea of distance......or is it ok to make a route up to suit personal fitness/ability?
....such as over the lovely crossing of the Tees at Girsby, back to Scotch Corner for coffees, then the simple route to Tan Hill through Richmond and Reeth):
http://goo.gl/maps/VUEnq
....
wpould love to do it......i have a health issue, which means i can only spin out at 10/12 mph, and climb slower.
i might come and meet everyone for a drink at the start, and then make my own way to tan hill.
i have a route that joins the one in the link at reeth. it is 40 mile up to tan hill and i think i can manage that, and the ride to kirby stephen or back to northallerton in the morning.
The ride to the station at Kirby Stephen isn't that bad is it? I've ridden it a few times now and it was pretty normal urban riding really :-\ :-\
Pooh sticks?
Will we be near any suitable bits? And would we have time/our ride leader's approval?
Edit: mind you, it looks as though we will be there around 2am or not long after. I'm not sure that river swimming in the dark is a great plan. Perhaps that's just the southern wuss in my coming out.
Hmmm: We're probably Orkney bound and might be on our way back roughly coinciding with this. I wonder if the logistics will work?
Any suggestions for a touring luggage drop would be helpful please. :)
Oh yes, absolutely splendid. The ride up from York was a bit of a slog last year, on account of all the flat, but you literally sail up the hills, and the ride back to Darlo isn't scary at all... ;D
Bah, humbug!! Unfortunately I just cannot make the ferries and trains play the game so we're unfortunately not going to make it. :( :( :(
We will console ourselves with anothe assault on the lantern rouge on the Wiggy 100 in October.
Enjoy the ride folks.
Deano, if you are still accepting starters I'm up for this ride.
I've only just seen the post.
We could meet up for a pre ride pint if you like.
I should now be up for this (subject to approval from SWMBO), as my work are having a garden party that day. I am invited, but a) it is in Cambridge, so I wouldn't be able to have a drink anyway as I would still need to drive home and b) I wouldn't get paid for it anyway if I attended.

I've only just got round to scanning the thread from the first year of this ride, so this sailed right over my head.
Hmmm, what are trusty internet friends for, eh?
You're still coming though. (It's not all that tough!*)Oh yus. I just need to remember to read with more cynicism. ;D I thought she was a nice girl. ::-)
*given the alternatives
It was a tough ride for Kim. Being shouted at by the staff (well, one member of staff, who needs to be ignored or told to FO) for being late probably didn't help.
Tickets booked as far as Newcastle for this, so I'm properly committed now. Just need to decide whether to leave 5 mins or 50 mins for a connection at Newcastle Central.
Hmm, Yarm's a possible longer route. Things'll have have quietened down by two or three am, won't they? :-\
Breakfast booked for 15 at Tan Hill (two vegetarian)
Breakfast booked for 15 at Tan Hill (two vegetarian)
Can I have a veggie breakfast too, please?
Yes, that's what I was thinking. My assumption was that the climbing needed to stay pretty similar and the climb from Reeth was inviolable.
Failing that I was attempting to draw a CDC in the lanes between Northallerton and scotch corner, but hadn't produced anything I was really pleased with yet.
I really wish we were doing this ride again.
But - when we did it, the conditions were perfect. Could we beat that?
Also - we have other priorities this year which are important to us. I hope you all have as good a time as we did, last time.
I'm looking a bit flaky for this atm.
I'm looking a bit flaky for this atm.
As mentioned up-thread Dave L and I are getting into NTR at 21.38 and leaving DAR at 15.48.
I guess that leaves us plenty of time for a beer in Northallerton before the off.
Apologies if I've missed it but is there a designated meeting place ?
With luck we'll also have time to get a drink in Darlo before our train home. Hopefully Deano will be able to advise on the best place to sit in the sun and enjoy fine ales.
I haven't forgotten that I owe you a drink Jane :)

You passed a few fine pubs on the run into Darlo two years ago :P
I've spent today being a) fatigued and unproductive and more importantly b) not riding a bike.
Optimism levels decreasing... :(
For those arriving before 22:30, the meeting point is THoFC (PM me for address, I shall drop you a PM shortly, Andrew), after that the meeting point is The Golden Lion, Romanby, DL7 8HA (NOT the Golden Lion in NTR!)
N.B. this is the Golden Lion at DL7 8HA and not the Golden Lion in Northallerton itself. To find it is very simple - leave the station to the west (through the car park on the same level as the platform), exit the car park, turn left, cross the level crossing, and you're there. Like this (http://goo.gl/maps/yvxlY). We'll be in the beer garden at the back.
Can I have a late signing for this one please?
Can you recommend a B&B in Northallerton for Mrs Miggins for Friday night (she is currently not fit enough to ride)
Mrs Miggins now jumping around swearing a lot!
Probably not. I have to work a 12 hour shift on the Sunday. My first day back off the sick since I saw you Marcus, and I really don't want to cock up that day.
She could've stayed here with me!!!
That's the route we took two years ago, pretty much.
Except that you should take the left in South Otterington, then straight over the crossroads at the A684 into Romanby.
What time will you set off for the RV?

I think you mean R @ X?
Straight over will take you down towards SHARK LANE (DUM DUM DUUUUUUUM)
Thanks Phil, I think it's gonna be a late evening arrival as Canardly is working and won't get to me untill 18.30
What time will you set off for the RV?
That's pretty much the route I'll follow. Online mapping says that 55km, so I was going to set off at 9:30.
Deano, is the route finalized? Need to load it onto my GPS (although I'll prob bring a paper map as well).

By the way, I wouldn't normally look at weather forecasts this far out, but I happened to see one on the news, and what can I say except :o  ;D :D 8) 8)
Hmm - there's definitely something wrong. The weather forecast looks to good to be true.
The fork will be fine, there is nothing in it to cause catastrophic failure.............and the weather looks good.
Looking at the weather forecast, I really really wish we were going. Could it be a repeat of the unrepeatable year?
Oh fboab? Do we really have to ride an audax on Saturday? Hmmm?
It's a non-travel weekend :(.
I'm sure we could work something out on another weekend, but fboab needs to be in the vicinity of BSE.
Anyone else?
Anyone else?
Me. But my train's not until after 5 - I think I'm on the same one as Kim.
Mrs Miggins will be joining us at Tan Hill for breakfast.

I'm heading for Darlington after Tan Hill too. Currently I'm not sure if I'm riding from there back to Durham, training from there back to Durham, or riding back to Northallerton to collect the car.
I'm not going to be in Northallerton until 11:30 is on Friday night. I'm going to the theatre before, probably in my YACF top... and intending to escape in the interval and either head straight for the train or drive down.
If it's the Gala Theatre, you'll probably be alright. Are you seeing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Durham? You've got it right first time. I'm booking on the 22:59 which gets in at 23:47, but if I can get away in time I'll catch the 22:10 (Transpennine Express so there won't be any problems getting the bike on). That would get me in to the Golden Lion before 11:00.

Marvellous. We might want the cake on the ride!
And here's an incentive for the hills: I've booked 20 breakfasts, and I reckon there'll be 22 of us ;D(click to show/hide)
I thought BillPlumTree rode it on fixed in 2011?andrewc's photo from 2011 suggests not. I can see a derailleur.
Phew! I'm not going mad.
Bah!
(Body in absolutely no state for this sort of abuse. I've overdone it again, and if I could stop sneezing for more than 5 minutes, I'd still be asleep.)

And Nikki promised that she wouldn't break you.......... stay away from the fun Factory
I love the Golden Lion's website, with its superfluous apostrophe's and the map bering the legend "Were are we?"
Can you bring bikes into the beer garden without dragging them through the bar?
Will you still be at the pub when I arrive?
You've thought this through haven't you ? ;D
Will you still be at the pub when I arrive?
I expect so. It's the departure point, and we won't leave without you.
What time are you due into Northallerton?
We will be on our way very soon, we will call in for coffee if we may Phil

Didn't load the route from York to Northallerton. OMG, I might have to use a map.
I take it back - bastards, the lot of you.
Sorry Jane, that I didn't introduce myself. You did introduce yourself, or Deano introduced you. It was me, at that point not really being in full mental working order that wasn't able to process information at that point. Stressed and tired then. But the ride cured all that. So double thanks. I shall have to think of some suitable acknowledgement of your kindness.
It was, indeed me, that rode home and got you a wheel.
Glad that it meant you could enjoy such a fantastic ride.

There was one absent friend whose company is normally a delight, but I was quite pleased that she wasn't there on this occasion. If she reads this she will know who she is (probably so will everyone else).
Thanks, everyone. When I did Tan Hill as a newcomer to the forum in 2011 it was one of the highlights of my cycling (and social) life. I'm realy glad you all had the hoped-for great time. I also had a lovely day out riding and helping on an Audax in the Peaks but it was a calendar change that made the dates clash. I hope it doesn't happen again - the clash, I mean.
It just occurred to me to start an alphabetical list of Great Dales:-
Arkengarth, Barbon, Cover, Dent, E, Farn, Gars....
Suggestions?
Thanks again

Wow, is this your bridge (at Whorlton and my favourite bridge in the world)?

Peter, I just spent ages searching for a place named "inverdale" before I realised what you were on about

(In my defence, the entire thing had passed me by)
I didn't share the info on the ride, but when we were kids we used to stand on that bridge and wait until a car was coming, then vigorously shake the cables to make the bridge sway alarmingly, and stand aside to watch the expressions of the drivers ;DThis thread just gets better and better!

No, that would have taken forever!
Actually, I did briefly consider sending Phanta over the Stang instead, but it was just too complicated with different groups and stuff - and the Stang is much, much harder.
Deano reckons its worse than it was in 2011 - I think so too. Now and then I cheated by riding on a grass bit because it really was a bit too rough and skiddy for skinny tyres.
I'd like to try it on 37mm tyres - maybe next year.
Our trick was for 10 of us or so to all stomp across the bridge together in time. Is it even worse than that horrible track?! :o
That was definitely the least fun bit IMHO, though everyone else seemed not to be bothered. I was paranoid about getting another puncture from all the rocks strewn about, and also worried about holding everyone up. After some words of advice from mrcharly and slowcoach, I did ride most of it (except the really bad bits). Not the worst COR I've done, but the worst on 25mm slicks I think. The descent down past the farm, when it got vaguely tarmac-like again, was fun though!
