Friday Night Ride to Tan Hill - Northallerton, July 5th 2013
« on: 24 March, 2013, 02:05:17 pm »
the start will be at the Golden Lion in Romanby (near Northallerton station) at midnight, on Friday 5th July

N.B. this is the Golden Lion at DL7 8HA and not the Golden Lion in Northallerton itself. To find it is very simple - leave the station to the west (through the car park on the same level as the platform), exit the car park, turn left, cross the level crossing, and you're there. Like this. We'll be in the beer garden at the back.

Third year of running for this - who fancies it again? An overnight ride to Tan Hill high up in the Yorkshire Dales, which is the highest pub in the UK, and an institution in the finest sense of the word.

Tan Hill, from the east.

The gang at York Station in 2011

The thread for the first ride is here:

https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=45766.0

And though last year's ride was a smaller affair, with less clement weather (I promise to order the same weather as we had in 2011), much fun was again had by the attendees.

https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=59135.0

As above, the start point will be at the Golden Lion in Romanby, which is a welcoming pub conveniently close to Northallerton station (leave the station to the west, pass the station car park, turn left across the level crossing, and you're there).

Breakfast will be available at the pub. £5 a head, vegetarian option available, and we'll work out the payments on the day.

Getting to Northallerton:

Northallerton has pretty good transport links - Grand Central services from London stop there and are very bike-friendly, as are the Trans Pennine Express services which also drop off at Northallerton.

If you are coming from the south and catching a service which doesn't stop at Northallerton, you may have to change at York, in which case the Trans-Pennine Express trains are very welcoming to cyclists, and do not require a bicycle reservation.

leaving Tan Hill:

Kirkby Stephen is the closest station, but this has small, infrequent trains which serve Carlisle and Leeds. Useful for getting south or west, but there may be issues with space for bicycles (although, two years ago, Wowbagger was the only cyclist from our group to use Kirkby Stephen, and he reported no problems). About 13 miles away, vastly downhill, with some steep pulls where you cross the denes, and the last bit to the station is uphill.

Darlington is about 30 miles away from Tan Hill, all downhill, and has frequent services on the East Coast main line. As we did two years ago, I will lead a group back to Darlington. I would allow at least three hours for this ride, when booking trains. However, the route is very simple, so you could go off on your own without getting lost.

THE ROUTE

This is the route from Romanby/Northallerton to Scotch Corner:

http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=572514

N.B. the route through Northallerton is merely sketched in, and at Scotch Corner we will make a decision on whether to take the simple, direct route to Tan Hill, or whether to essay the longer route, so here we have two routes.

The longer route:

The direct route (as backup in case we're pushing for time, or it's blowing a hoolie):

We can't do that weekend.  :'(

But it was the Very Best Ride of the year in 2011, and that was a year with a lot of good rides.

I commend it to the House (as they say)

Damn.

It's probably the best weekend for me - the week before is the Pendle, for example.  You're not doing that, are you? :o

28th June could well be ideal for me. I still have a little more teaching to do so we won't be away. York was OK but I'm also fine with Northallerton. I'm pretty sure that more trains from Kings Cross stop at York.

You might have to change at York, Wow.

I think I can do that date and would really like to do this ride again.

Not bothered by the starting location, but if we set off from York it needs to be an hour earlier than the 2011 ride. We would have been fine on that one but were plagued by punctures. Doesn't take many to really eat into the ride time.

Aye, if it was York I'd ask everyone to be there for an 11 pm start (or possibly earlier). Tiermat did that last year.

The weekend before is the York Rally.  And the weekend before that is when I'm die to become a dad again. :)

So I think we're unlikely, I'm afraid.
Getting there...

Either start is fine by me, although I agree we need an earlier start if we are going from York.

I should be there :)

It's a ride I'd really like to do but the distance from York is just too far for me.   Don't change just for me as I'd then have to book trains etc., but I'd vote for Northallerton.

*snigger*

No. We're doing Y-L-Y at the start of June then Flat Holl and Back that weekend. I've just tormented myself with the photos from the 2011 ride.

Sigh.

Aye - that's kinda my thinking, PB, after Tiermat (I think it was Tiermat) suggested starting at Northallerton.

I like the route from York (for lots of reasons), but starting from Northallerton knocks loads of mileage off, and makes it open to those who don't feel capable of riding 125 miles overnight.

I'm riding these two as well, so I can't make this :(

Hmm, that's two people who'd like to move the date.

Also, Gerry's organising a 100 from Wiggy on Sunday June 30th, which I imagine a few locals might want to attend.

Any thoughts on Friday 5th July?

Unless there are any major objections, shall we move it to Friday 5th July?

I'm very tempted and the pink bike should be up and running by June.  Not sure about the distance though, I'll have to work on that.

Would get my vote, as there's a 100 local to me on the 30th too.

Not that I've looked at trains yet.

Or got any cycling fitness...

I can make the 5th, but go with what works for the most.

If the date is changed I'd vote for a York start.

Yes, I'm in.  5th July is good for me, although end of June equally good.

Either start is okay, but Northallerton would be fine with me.

btw it's a good job it was me that got an earful off the toilet attendant in Reeth.  If Jogler had got hold of her I think he might have knocked her out.
The friendly landlord helped us put our bikes into his very big shed.  Very carefully we did not fall into the acid bath which was there.

5th July would probably suit me better as then I could join Mark on to Holl and Back.

5th July is free from audax, but I have complex childcare issues that could mean a family outing (me & boab minor onna tandem up that Hill??!!!!) or free & childless. Either way we'd be much more likely, to the point of keen, for that date (assuming we could find accommodation afterwards?).
York without childers, NTR with. So whatever the majority votes on as I really don't know what's going to happen with the offspring visiting the other parent.
