Did anybody else here see Sir Chris Hoy fuck it up bigtime today?
Basically what happened is this:
- Sir Chris shows how it's done by being the fastest qualifier in 9.999s, the only rider to go under 10s.
- In the first round he's drawn against the 24th-fastest qualifier (out of 24), a young but clearly-talented Irish rider called Felix English who only turned 18 a month ago.
- Felix leads out, with Sir Chris looking menacing yet supremely confident on his wheel.
- Commentators make predicatable remarks like "good experience for the youngster", "intimidating" and "a formality for Sir Chris".
- Sir Chris rides away, opening up a big gap, making it look easy, looks back and practically sits up.
- Sir Chris heads for the line, still with what looks an unimpeachable gap, young Felix though hasn't given up...
- On the final straight, young Felix closes the gap and comes round right at the line!
As this is the first round, the sprint is only one ride, not best out of three, and according to UCI regulations, there is no
repechage...
Edit -
here's a better report.
