Revolver would make a pretty good case for that supposition.  ;D

The recent remake of "The Philadelphia Experiment".  The CGI was really, really terrible and the characters were mostly one-dimensional but somehow I stuck with it to the end.  Nice twist.

The Shawshank Redemption.

Never seen it before. Astonishing, can’t believe I’ve missed it for so long.

Weird film week (not a deliberate choice, just the films that came up)...

First off The Killing of a Sacred Deer featuring Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan. Heart surgeon accidentally kills man by conducting operation after a few drinks, man's son seeks retribution. So far sounds like standard Hollywood stuff. But the director is the guy who did Lobster and the story is based on Greek myths, including Greek-God-like powers. Well-made film, as you'd expect, but the plot didn't really hold together.

Next up Vivarium with Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg. Young couple get trapped in a vast empty new-build suburban estate, where they are required to bring up a child that arrives in a cardboard box and grows very quickly. Like a cuckoo, as the opening scenes make clear. Overlong for the substance it contains, but thought-provoking.

Lastly Rent-A-Pal low-budget indie with non-famous actors. Lonely 40-year-old man caring for his senile mother descends into psychosis after making friends with a guy on a self-help VHS tape he randomly picks up from a dating agency. Very well done. Resists the expected plot devices, and all the better for it. Not a great film by any means but worth the watch.

The Shawshank Redemption.

Never seen it before. Astonishing, can’t believe I’ve missed it for so long.

And, astonishingly, missed out on the best picture Oscar that year to.... Forrest Gump

Ah, Forrest Gump is a great film, but The Shawshank Redemption is something else.

The Stephen King novella is good, too.  In my head, I had Morgan Freeman's voice narrating every word to me  ;D  It comes as part of a collection of short stories, Different Seasons, which are all excellent.  The Body was made into the wonderful Stand By Me.

Stephen King is a superb storyteller, even without the weird bollocks.  The first ~100 pages of 'Salem's Lot are devoid of anything creepy but they're such a good story without that you don't miss it.

Agreed; my favourite King novel is Dolores Claiborne.  Apart from the visions at the time of the eclipse, there's nothing supernatural at all, and it's just a great story.  See also: Misery.

Saw this last week. I really enjoyed it!

It's not exactly ambitious - it's just more "Lock Stock ..." stuff, but with everything up a notch; tighter, more stylish, more Matthew Mahogany. Without Hugh Grant it's probably just shiny and watchable. He takes it into jolly good entertainment territory. :)

+1.  I've watched it twice !   As well as Hugh Grant, I also thought Colin Farrell was brilliant

Many excellent films missed out on oscars and many second rate films coined them in.  They’re not really about art, but rather about Hollywood self congratulation.

For the first time in 30-odd years, The Neverending Story (with the boys, obvs).  Generally a crock of shit, but with a classic bit of Giorgio Moroder that brought back some 1980s F1 nostalgia (the Ivory Tower Theme).

Philophobia

A locally produced and filmed film, with a lot of recognisable locations. A coming of age film set at exam time in summer (so probably more of a history film...)

Maybe a bit long, but beautifully filmed and angst-ridden.
It is simpler than it looks.

Watched this last night. Actually it was pretty gripping. Hugh Grant was amazing.

The Dig

True story of the Sutton Hoo excavation in Suffolk in 1939.    Slow.  Ralph fiennes was very good in it though and as usual for Netflix, beautifully shot and produced.   Worth a watch but not as good as the hype IMHO

(Ken stott was also good)

TV's Mark Commode was somewhat scathing about the fictitious romantic sub-plot with the fictional RAF pilot, though.

Professor Larrington was afforded a sneak preview by the nice people of Netflix, which was not helped by her intertube connection repeatedly falling over at crucial points in the story.
