Etrex 10 + Linux
« on: 01 March, 2015, 05:06:55 pm »

Have ordered an eTrex 10 to replace my aged eTrex H.

What Linux software do people recommend to go with the eTrex 10? On my old eTrex I used to load gpx/loc files of geocaches onto the device, but I get the impression the 10 has other funky functions. What other magic can I do?

I just use a file manager (well cp/mv) on my etrex 30. Are you sure you meant to buy the etrex 10 and not the 20? It can't accept sdcards or maps.

Apparently its possible to load some sort of maps on the Etrex 10. Though its has rather limited memory (about 8MB) and a simple screen and slow processor etc, so you'd have to use pretty basic maps.
Some maps here: http://etrex10.ru/en/
Or maybe these: http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/maps-garmin-fenix

For Linux software, you could try QLandKarte GT.

The SMC contour maps might be a good start if they'll fit?

I have a very simple usecase for a GPS. All it has to do is give me a speed display, and log a track to GPX of where I've been. That's enough for me. My old eTrex H did both of these, but had the habbit of cutting out randomly. So I flogged it, and got the 10 instead. As it's a whole generation beyond the old H, it seems it's more advanced, so I was curious what else I might be able to do.

Dropping GPX files into Garmin/GPX/ did the trick.

Cheers
