It would be nice to think that the "civilized" world has progressed since but recent events might give grounds for doubt!
I really enjoyed this but will leave others better qualified to pass comment.
(As a sometime historian I am sorry to say that I wasn't aware of this lady's feat.)

Even more remarkable is the first woman to cycle around the world in 1894. American (Latvian) Annie Kopchovsky sponsored by the Londonderry Lithia Spring Water Co. She was 24, the mother of three children and only (it is said) took a change of clothing and a pearl handled revolver.
