Routing tools with a usable heightmap for Shetland?
« on: 04 February, 2020, 09:00:25 pm »
Does anyone know if any of the routing tools out there have a usable height map for Shetland (while also being usable... i.e. not Strava)
GSV suggests the terrain is "Rolling"

I use mapmyride there's a dropdown that let's you add height trace. Takes a few goes to get used to it, but I've used it for years now. Gradients are colour coded.

My only criticism would be that as the ride length goes up the gradients get smoothed and you may not see the max instantaneous.

As to Shetland, I would describe it as rolling, and windy, there are very few of what I would call steep gradients, and those are generally short sections

Shetland the TV series also suggests the terrain is rolling and also very exposed.  There is little traffic but what there is may try to run you off the road and over a cliff. They will however catch your killer even if they have to travel as far as Glasgow or Norway to do it.

Anything using the SRTM data from NASA is going to be rubbish as its coverage doesn't go high enough

Here's the issue in RidewithGPS

A quick check in Mapometer shows rolling hills, and reasonable numbers.
Fits with the sampled data from Strava too.

I'm probably the only person who was wondering about the connection between woodworking and a Scottish island.

This prompted me to add the missing tiles to my app:

https://bikegpx.com/routes/9dfeab02

(It doesn't do routing, or turning, but it can import direct from RWGPS)

According to dictionary,com that's Routering.

It doesn't recognize Routeing but does like Routing.
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/routing?s=t

How about leiðbeiningar then, possibly, it's google icelandic, but that's probably closer to Norn than modern Norse, wasn't enough Norn written down.
Modern Scandi-Norse seems to agree wit Routing  though the o is missing from danish.

By Scottish standards, it's rolling but with the kind of Dutch hills not shown on any mapping ;D
