Single pivot rear brake

How do I stop one side of e.g. a campagnolo rear brake sticking. It's the opp side to the cable where the pivot is. There is a hex bolt running to a nut but looks to be a grub screw involved. No way will that grub screw come out.

Which Campag single pivot brake? Something this century?

Usually a cone spanner on the brake bolt flats.
Wheel meet again, don't know where, don't know when...

Loosen the mounting nut, grab the calipers and rotate so the sticking side is away from the rim, retighten whilst holding the calipers. Might need a few goes to get it right, and make sure the cable is not stopping the calipers from moving properly.

That's how I do my Super/Nuovo brakes.

it sounds more like you are describing a dual pivot brake; a single pivot brake has the pivot in the centre, not on one side.  Photo?

cheers

It sounds like a Campag dual pivot? If it’s one of the Record silver earlier type ( no bolt showing on outside edge), the small hex nut is indeed a locknut. It is held in with a blue lock tight type material. It should shift, but make sure you have a very good fitting, strong key.
Then you can carefully back off the pivot nut to re-lube it.
If it’s another version it’s pretty much the same, but there’s an Allen bolt on show as well.

prob described as a single pivot side pull. From 2000 to present day.

single pivot was last seen in the campag catalogue in 2018.   If one of these then a cone spanner on the central nut (that the spring mounts to) as LWaB suggests.

Things that can stop the brake from centring include

- that the centre nut is poorly adjusted
- that the cable housing is pulling the brake to one side
- that the centre pivot is binding
- that the spring is binding (instead of sliding easily) where it bears against each arm

The last of these is surprisingly common; seasoned bike fettlers habitually add a tiny drop of oil to each spring contact whenever they have the can in their hand.

If the centre pivot is binding, instead of taking it apart, it may be sufficient just to douse it in oil and 'exercise' it.

Is this the sort of brake you’re talking about?

BTW apologies if this is b-obvious but single pivot calipers can wear the brake blocks so as to produce a lip at the bottom of the brake block. This lip can interfere with the operation of the brake, especially on the workstand.  So if you have not checked for that, it might be a good idea to do so.
