Just a thought: If a former soldier, winner of the VC, becomes a World Champ, say at Veteran (pun unintentional but unavoidable) level, should they wear their medal on their rainbow jersey?  :)

I (and JW) once met a former Veteran World Champion (65-69) when he was 71. He was wearing his rainbow jersey (the white bits not now as bright as they'd once been), but I didn't know who he was. He was of the right age to have served in WW2, but had been in a reserved occupation (thanks wiki), so I can't answer your conundrum.

[He asked if we could pass on a message, so I asked who I should say he was, at which point he looked at me incredulously, as if to say "you really don't know who I am?" then told us his name and left, at which point JW, somewhat older than me, nearly fell out of his chair, the veteran having been a hero of his in his youth.]

Jerseys, shorts and stockings is the traditional football outfit description.
I seem to recall Aussie Rules Footballistas wear Guernseys rather than Jerseys. Whether this adds anything to the discussion is another matter.

Is anyone likely to confuse some fat mamil stuffed into a bit of rainbowed lycra for a World Champion?

No?

No. Nor was it Derek Hymen or Stuart Clitheroe.

Are you sure?

the eleventh time I rode the Scunthorpe 400 was with Derek Hymen, because Stuart Clitheroe did a DNS that year,

I was referring to the weight situation.
LeMond had a Mexican food and ice cream problem even in his peak racing years.

I think cyclists (stage racers) have a particular problem in that they are used to a vast daily intake of calories and it's hard to stop.  I've seen 9000 kcal per day suggested for TdF racers, and they still lose weight over the three weeks.  They also eat so much pasta that they get the squits.  Most people are tolerant of gluten, but not THAT much gluten.

But that is only during stage races. The rest of the time they are weighing their food and taking sleeping pills so that they can starve themselves and still get to sleep.  Eating disorders are pretty common, apparently.

The shot of Rasmussen with his shirt off is worse.  Now there's a guy who needs to eat a few pies.

It reminds us that in addition to the guernsey-jersey-shirt overlap, there is a guernsey-jersey-sweater-jumper overlap.

Rainbow wrists & ankles are hardly new.  They were/are featured on Tudor longs & tops, and on cycling clothing before that.  It's not the same thing as wearing a champion's rainbow jersey.
My home office slob wear this winter has largely been Tudor longs. I've had them since about 1993, it's good to get some use out of them! World Champion of desk racing?
