Adding link to track chain
« on: 05 October, 2010, 08:53:32 pm »
I don't need to do this but I think it might be better if I did, now that I reflect on it, in case I want to have an 18T sprocket instead of my current 17T:

How safe is it to add a link to a good 1/8" track chain?? Are the pins damaged when pushed out?

I hope not!  :o
I had to fettle the timing chain* on our tandem and fit a half link, and it's been fine for a  couple of years. Come to think of it (AFAIK) any tandem timing chain is going to have a home-made join in it. Isn't it?  :-\

EDIT: should have said it's a 1/8" track chain.

It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

I think it's only certain chains that have peened rivets and hence (I think) need  a new rivet to re-join. Should be ok with mine.

It was fine. My practice link went on ok but needed some "tight link" treatment with the chain tool. Took that off and joined the chain for real - no problems this time round.

I'll be cautious for a little while pulling away from the lights just to be sure.
