Title: We apologise for the delay
Post by: David Martin on 23 April, 2008, 08:35:21 pm

This is the captain speaking. We will be delayed landing tonight as there is a hole in the runway and we are waiting for them to fill it in so we can land.

We have fuel for an extra 2 hours flying so will continue going round in circles until we need to divert or they open the runway.

Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

So I turned to the chap next to me as we looked out of the window and saw the same bit of edinburgh through the gap in the clouds - "I think we've been here before".

Sounds lovely.  Takes the name "Turnhouse" to a new depth.

I remember being on a flight from the Gold Coast to Sydney (it was a tough job, but someone had to do it).  I am estimating that we were within a foot of touching the runway when the pilot aborted the landing.

"Sorry about that girls and boys, ladies and gentlemen* but the plane on the runway in front of us was going a little slower than we anticipated."

Not bad, as laxatives go.

*Bloody Virgin.

Moral of the story: Don't build your airport on top of a load of old mine workings!

Reminds me of several attempted Ryanair landings at Newquay. Foggy place, Newquay - and not being a Real Airport, it has no instrument capability at all.

Some time after you see the flaps extend, and hear the undercarriage come out - you get yourself ready for the landing. You expect to see the ground out of the window. When there's no ground, and then the engines rev up hard, and the front of the plane points upward, and the captain says "Sorry about that boys and girls, all I could see was the end of the runway appear through the fog", you just know you're headed for Bristol yet again...  >:(

These days - I take my bike, and a couple of trains, when I need to go to Cornwall.

Marj want's to go to Italy but I wont fly again as a result of 3 scary experiences, one involving fire tenders & ambulances at Ringway.

I will draw her attention to this thread in support of my cowardice attitude.

I have suggested the following alternatives,
coach
train
car
tandem

the latter being my favourite ;D

Take the train.  We did it once to Pisa, it was huge fun.

     at Ringway.

Bloody hell, you're giving your age away calling it Ringway !

That's like people around here calling Birmingham Airport "Elmdon"

I have fond memories of a family trip to Castle Donnington some 4 decades ago. The place was small enough for us to go into the planes and talk to the pilots.

What about taking the car (and maybe tandem) on the train? We did it one year to get the morris minor down to Italy, drove home stopping on the way.

"Sorry about the delay ladies and gentlemen, but there's a cow on the runway."

Charter flight to Corfu.  Bristol, 1994 or 1995.

At least with Air Southwest you end up at Exeter.

Cycling down there next time, and coming back by train (quicker to ride straight to Bodmin Parkway rather than going via Newquay).
