Lava flows relentlessly forward

Had an amazing walk on Sunday...

(Click through for more.)

This volcano has been erupting between two of Iceland's icecaps for the last week.

It was a long walk up -- 16km walk each way with 1000m of ascent, half of it with icy snow underfoot.  Took more than 5 hours to get up and 3 to get down.  But well worth it.

First sign of the volcano was tiny pieces of ash on the snow.  Then as the ash got bigger and thicker, the clouds of smoke on the horizon became clearer.   We were able to walk right up to one of the lava flows, a slow stream of lava advanced a few metres while we were there but then cooled down.

It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.
