It's just the little "brook" that runs infront of our house! It's incredible how quickly, and how high, it rises up. To put it in perspective, this is a picture of the brook at it's "normal" level (it's about 1 1/2m below the bridge, before we the flood defences were built.

That will explain it. Small channels cannot convey a lot of water as the precipitation level rises. As the water level in the channel rises, it quickly "feedbacks" up the channel. The worse the vegetation, the slower the flow, the less efficient the conveyance too.

Glad you and your family were okay though.
