Welshpool to Caerphilly again?

I'm not complaining, there was a massive crowd on the mountain last year, and they go up it twice this year. The finish area by the castle was also obviously a big hit.

Was that the one where Bernie Eisel hopped off his bike, cheered the peloton through, then hopped back on his bike to join in again?

Part of me is glad that they are not running the same old London crit circuit again.  They have done it far too many times..  and there is more to London than up and down the Embankment.  (although I accept that it is an easy area to close off for a Sunday.)

The rest of me liked it as it was busy and had good crowds and great photo opportunities.

I recall when there were races at the West Midlands Safari Park years ago.

Races were billed as "The Meals on Wheels Kermesse"

Provisional team rosters here: http://www.tourofbritain.com/_ns_pdf/2012/ToB_2012_Provisional_RiderList.pdf

Apart from the Brits, Basso and Sammy Sanchez would seem to be the biggest names, with Tyler Farrer and Sep Vanmarcke for Garmin Sharp not far behind.  Nice to see Magnus Backstedt (riding for UK Youth) back racing (or has he never been aeway?  Presumably this will be one of Jonathan Tiernan-Locke's last rides for Endura Racing before he joins a Protour team.

I have sort of missed the developments with this, but it is starting to look like a proper race, if you judge it by the teams entered.  Some that struck me:

Euskatel Euskadi
Team NetApp
Orica-Greenedge
Garmin-Sharp
VacanSoleil
Liquigas-Cannondale

Not too shabby, eh?  Good experience for the other team riders (Giordana-Node4, Endura, Team GB Youth) and a good draw for the crowds

I will be wandering along to the START!!! seeing as it's practically my front door (actually they do a big loop so don't even go past the end of my road).  Either at the start itself or near the cemetery as it's a quiet route there from mine.
The house may or may not be full of teenagers for my son's birthday.  Feel free to invite yourself around for a cuppa regardless, but warn me first.

We're popping down to Ipswich too before we head up to Norwich for the finish. I'll just drive as close as possible to the start and find somewhere to park for a couple of hours. I've never been to Ipswich so have no clue if that's a sensible plan.  ;D

It may turn out I was lying about being around, but won't know until tomorrow.
Regardless, there is park and ride round Ipswich for those of you wanting to avoid driving into the centre.  As I don't have a car I cann't help about parking though, soz.
Apparently the East Anglian Daily times had some lovely maps of the route.  But not in the online version that I could see.

Yes, I will be there complete with yacf buff.  Those with cars best park further out in a random street and walk in.  I am near the top of Albion Hill.

Me and a few friends went into Ipswich to see the start of this year's ToB. One friend on his way in caught sight of the Sky riders bus, did a quick stop and managed to get to the whole team's autograph - he was made up.

There were big crowds along the waterfront but unfortunately the bit where we were standing (only about 75m from the start line) there was no tannoy so much head turning each time the crowd cheered. Anyway it was good to see the teams come through.

Got home later in the day and watched the race live on ITV4 only to see Cav come a pearler along with a few others. Good win for Sky on the first day though even if it wasn't whom they were expecting.

Gibbo.

Went along and saw the race coming through Kesgrave (eastern outskirts of Ipswich). Bernie and Cav were at the back, Christian Knees at the front at the time. Didn't see Wiggo.

I watched the end of the race on the TV at my Mum's (managed to cadge Sunday Lunch from her, bonus!) and it was disappointing to see Cav's crash but still very exciting!

Do they provide it - or buy it in? If the latter then it's like Ch4 and the Paralympic road race - OBC didn't cover it and Ch4 couldn't afford to, so no pics.

Commentary's still pretty poor - seem to be failing to communicate useful information as opposed to information (aka noise).
Today's finish; Sky are running out of steam so Cav drops back in the wheels to avoid being left hanging out front too far out (a la Ben Swift in La Vuelta), and the commentator gets over excited appears to miss, and so fails to communicate, the tactics involved, and instead suggests that Cav's now in a poorer position.
I wonder if they're trying to inject excitement or just getting caught up in their own emotion?  Either way, i think there's room for improvement.

It's true though that Cav ended up in a poorer position owing to having dropped back/ allowed a couple of guys in front. Then he didn't win. So the overall info from the commentary was correct from the perspective of the sofa watcher?

More pearls from the commentary today.
The pronunciation of Quernmore couldn't have been more wrong and I'm wondering about the Barnstaple to Dartford stage.
Also, what is it with the "Manx Express" ?

On a separate subject; I'm sure the riders would be more comfortable (not to say drier) with mud-guards  ;)

We are now torn between Eppynt and Caerphilly.  Seeing local boy Luke Rowe win on his doorstep would be cool, so that's probably favourite.

Oh to be perfect.

Let's try to remember that, in the main, commentators are presented with the same footage that we see, the same moment we see it.

They are then asked to talk for 5 hours, without a break, about the footage in an interesting way, and in the vain hope they don't offend any YACFers by mispronouncing the name of any villages they pass through.

Remember that there's an OFF button on every TV remote.

No one is saying that commentary is easy but listen to David Harmon on Eurosport and you'd think that it is. Ant McCrossan is better (although like Porter he has quite a strident tone to his voice), hell, even Carlton Kirby is better than Porter.

It's not just mis-pronunciations, he can't read the racing, cannot identify riders, uses his own terminology as if it's common cycling parlance (finishing funnel?), and his over-wrought use of language is grating to listen to. He is, quite frankly, appalling at road race commentary. Plus he's a complete dick, in person.

Going off topic...
Why so prickly against criticism of shite commentators ?   We like to watch cycling. Its not much to expect somebody to get basics right, 'cos its pretty frustrating when they don't, hence the venting here.   I dont think anybody would switch off because of them though, or even mute the telly.

As below, Mispronouncing some town names is not the issue, its the not following racing moves / mis-identfy riders, wrong terminology etc. All things a decent commentator would get right regardless of having to give 5 (?) hrs of commentary. (do itv4 show the stages live ?)

Why so prickly against criticism of shite commentators ?

1) Because I don't think they are shite at all.  Commentator style is very subjective.  Be careful what you wish for (or you may get the boring Australian fella whose commentary I heard over some recent race footage).

I like Hugh Porter's commentary! There, I've said it.  I've come out.  I find it a rather pleasant background mumble, like Ted Lowe and Snooker, John Motson and Football and Johnners for cricket. He's become part of cycling on TV for me. I couldn't care less how he pronounces the name of Basque telephone companies to be honest.

I'm not sure I actually hear what he's saying.  I can see what he sees and make my own internal commentary.

2) It's so refreshing to have so much cycling coverage on TV this year that I'd prefer to look at the positives (don't worry Lance, I don't mean your samples) rather than start to pick holes.  I'd rather have Hugh Porter commentating on cycling than have no cycling on TV.

3) Mostly though I really don't understand the mentality of watching a TV program if you find it frustrating or annoying.

Watching it once and moaning is normal.  Repeatedly watching it and moaning is just odd. Dontcha think? That's masochism.

Just back from watching the Tour cross Cannock Chase on Stage 5.

I got to the KOM spot about an hour before the riders were due to arrive to find the place packed! I have seen the last five tours live and have never seem a crowd like it! Shame most of the people arrived by car instead of cycling up there: come on folks, its only a cat 2 climb and if I can get up there at 120kg using a 39/25, it shouldn't be too hard for most.

Anyway, I found a spot and watched the whole 4 seconds it took for the group to pass by! Can't say the climb taxed them in anyway: indeed, half of the riders were chatting away to each other...shows how fit they are!

Managed to get away before the roads re-opened to traffic, which was nice.

I was further down the hill at the steep section.  Turned into a good days cycling & well worth a days holiday from work

The pronunciation of Quernmore couldn't have been more wrong and I'm wondering about the Barnstaple to Dartford stage.

We don't have to wait that long.

3) Mostly though I really don't understand the mentality of watching a TV program if you find it frustrating or annoying.

Watching it once and moaning is normal.  Repeatedly watching it and moaning is just odd. Dontcha think? That's masochism.

Ah yes, I forgot our default stance of "damned moan if you don't and damned moan if you do".

Well following my own advice I'm pressing the OFF button on the "why watch something if it irritates you?" spin-off.

I'm still liking the TV coverage, commentary and all.

It's noticeable, to me anyway, how much time the riders spend either swerving to avoid sunken grids and manholes, or alerting those behind of their presence.

Is this because our roads are, in general, worse for this sort of thing or that The Tour de France "circus" uses roads which are manicured just for the Tour?

The Tour of Britain, I think refreshingly, uses small lanes that I can relate to, rather than just hammering down pristine A-roads.

I'm not sure some of the Pros, from warmer climes (and warmer climbs), appreciate it in the same way I do.  Maybe you just develop a taste for cold, gritty water in the face after a few years of Audaxing.  Shap in the wind and rain....what's the Spanish for "Chapped Legs" ?

Both. Can you remember any of PBP? :) Well the Tour roads are mainly like that, but with surfaces 1/10th the age.

(Plus they get easier access to A-roads from the Authoritayz, so are less likely to use the tiny lanes the TofB seems to like.)

Cat's Eyes!

Major challenge for ToB riders.  Ever hit one?  Not nice at speed and the new rounded glass ones are a nightmare, even to motor bikes.

In France, you very rarely get these 'safety measures' and that is anotrher reason why cycling is so much fun in France.

I do notice "Le Peleton" bouncing over sleeping policemen a lot more in the French and Spanish events than in the TofB. Perhaps cos, again, they get to use more main roads and town centres. They seem to have got more frequent over the years.

On Monday's stage, some of the lanes around Siddington (near to where the feed zone was) had been newly patched with tar and marbles chippings. I don't know if it was TofB related or just a coincidence.
I'm not sure if pot-holes or the loose gravel would have been preferable.

I've often wondered if the TdeF roads are swept ahead of the race.
Seeing the commitment of some of the riders through bends where they can't possibly see the surface in advance, makes me think that they might be.
And yes, I am thinking of the Cancellara video.

It was terrific fun on Caerphilly Mountain.  I was standing in Camp Rowe a couple of hundred yards short of the summit, with a big group of Luke's family and his mates.  Amongst them were a 6'10" fairy, a boxer, a caveman, a gorilla and a bloke wearing swimming trunks and a marvel comic gimp mask...  A real carnival atmosphere.

I duped Cav by telling him he was "nearly half way" when he had nearly crested the climb.  He did look a bit worried...

Shame Bradley wasn't riding, but Cav, Luke Rowe and the other local boy Magnus Beckstadt all got massive shouts and all the UK riders were cheered through well.

Excellent day.

That group featured prominently on the coverage. I also spotted an Audax Cymru jersey, but not sure where in relationship to that group.  Mal Volio perhaps, Tewdric?  I didn't see miniog at the cycling but did on the coverage of the Ospreys game this evening.

The boxer was Luke's brother Matt and the 6'10" fairy was James "Tank" Lewis from the Port Talbot Wheelers, now sponsored by Wiggle and the owner of an Elite license. I haven't worked out who Captain Marvel or Captain Caveman is yet but I have my suspicions. Fair play to those lads, they're a good bunch. Last year Matt was dressed as Santa and the others all had Geraint Thomas masks. There's a fantastic photo of Matt on facebook, I'll post it later...

We went out for a 100km spin around Nelson, Bedlinog and Cwmcarn before heading up the Mountain, ending up at the right hand turn just after the summit. Good support for the local boys (Luke, Owain Doull and Magnus) and great to see Cav in the rainbow jersey.

Porter's off to the Netherlands to "commentate" on the World Championships for the BBC. Thank Jebus it's also shown on Eurosport.

Great stage of the ToB today - great racing, crowds and fantastic scenery. A shame for the riders that they had such a long transfer to tomorrow's start.

Mrs JT and I were guests of Yodel at yesterday’s stage and we got to ride in a car (Media 2) in the race convoy. What an eye-opener that was.

In the VIP area at the start in Reigate there were complimentary pastries and coffee plus some juicy gossip about certain high profile riders.  8) We showed a common touch by chatting to the Halls over the barrier (only joking Tim).  ;)

The commissaires radio channel was on in the car so we heard all the time-checks (not very scientific), race news, and some banter. Our car started ahead of the peloton and stayed there until the breakaway had formed. The start was delayed for 15 minutes because the Police radio system was down. Riders were sent back to their buses. Then they got some comms working and brought the start forward again but apparently some riders were late and the race rolled away in the neutralised section minus a full peloton. Then we waited for the gap to reach two and half minutes which allowed us to pull over and get in between the break and the peloton. The driver then got us right up to the breakaway riders before dropping back again to be replaced by another guest car. As soon as the gap came down we had to get out of that space and that was fun too speeding away from the break on the twisty lanes. We were never much more than a minute ahead of the race and at one point the driver in front was treating a descent so carefully that we concertinaed enough for the break to almost catch us.

When the peloton passed through Guildford for the first time, there was some concern on the radio about the deviation at the finish being too narrow. Shortly afterwards, everyone was reassured that it was still being built and would be fine by the time we came round again.

The crowds were incredible along the whole route. I’ve been going to the Tour de France for years and I’ve watched whole stages on TV and this was way beyond anything there. The driver was beeping the car horn and we were waving almost the whole time – of course we’re not famous or anything but most people, particularly little kids, at the side of the road appreciate it and adds to the excitement.

Being in ”the bubble” and witnessing the rolling road closure was fascinating. The police and the motorbike marshals do an amazing job but we were horrified as we approached Guildford for the final time: there were a lot of oncoming cars and even a bus inside the last 2km! :o  Of course, we were ahead of the race but not by much. Then as we raced over the cobbles to the finish line we came to an abrupt stop as a team van was stuck in the entrance to the deviation. One by one cars and motorbikes started arriving behind the stricken van. The crowd were jeering as the commentator was describing the final km’s – they and we knew we were in danger of an highly embarrassing and potentially dangerous climax to the race. Finally one of the ToB guys sprang into life and shouted and gesticulated for all the cars to reverse enough to let the van out. The crowd cheered as the traffic jam cleared and we hurtled around the deviation. We jumped out of the Skoda and ran to the course just as Cav began his sprint. We couldn’t see the finish line but we were right in front of the podium and just the width of the narrow road from where Cav collapsed and a slightly lost-looking Tiernan-Locke milled around.

The Team Sky riders did their thing, hugging Cav and they all congratulated JTL too, apart from Cavendish who pointedly ignored him. As usual Cav’s bird, Peta Todd, was there with their baby and her son and they were ushered into the area behind the podium. Meanwhile the winner of the Yodel sprints jersey, Peter Williams, came over to the barrier to hug his girlfriend who had to stand around and queue like a normal punter. The podium presentations at the ToB have a slightly shambolic feel to them in comparison to the ceremonies at the TDF and once again Jon Tiernan-Locke hurled his bouquet of flowers into the crowd. To my surprise it was arcing my way and I reached up and grabbed it to the delight of Mrs JT who has always wanted a rider to give her his flowers (this was close enough).

To be honest before yesterday we wondered whether being in a car might be a bit boring. We’d already passed-up the chance of a car ride on Stage 1 for logistical and dog reasons but we thought we’d give it a go here. If you ever get the chance, go for it - it’s bloody brilliant.

I had a go at following a stage of the Tour of Britain in 2007 on a motorbike, when it came past the end of our road. That was just as Cavendish was breaking through into the big time. I managed to get ahead of the peloton at three points, but didn't make the finish. I saw the Police do their thing three times, and it is impressive. By the time I was at the third stop the Police had sussed what I was doing, and they had me block off a minor road with my bike.
When I saw the Olympic torch relay it was obvious that it was being used as training ground for police escorts, as the lead bike was from the Met. The escort bikes are from a variety of forces to spread the expertise. I made a film on that day in 2007.
I even got the opportunity to tell Jens Voigt to 'dig in'.

Well it might not be that shocking to some but allegedly a certan sideburned chap did not have a stomach bug and a certain team disciplined two riders who were out drinking at 4am before the start of a stage. Whether these events are connected, I cannot say.

My source is impeccable, by the way.

I rode down for the start at Reigate and saw them off, but was surprised at how small the peloton was. That would explain it.

It was great being able to mix with the riders in the team bus area without too much security getting in the way. I also felt proud at the size of the crowds  - I hope this gives all the riders an extra incentive to participte in UK events.

Rather noticeable that Wiggo had his name as "WIGGo: WIGG to the power of 0=1 and that was his number.
Kristian House's number was 111 which, in the simplest substitution of letters for numbers is AAA - and what did he win?

BTW, on the last episode of The Cycle Show, KH's pulse rate at the top of the Stelvio was about 50bpm lower than that of the presenter.
