I guessed he wasn't there, but they seem a close knit family so it maybe had an effect.  Today though he di say he's completely knackered.  Crazy scedule so soon after the Olympics and US Open.

Go Dan!

I'm not sure Andy M has much of a chance of top spot this year, but he does have a chance.

I'd written it off as a possibility after a slightly disappointing US Open but Djokovic has been well off the form we've been used to, and he does seem to be vulnerable.

Murray is playing Vienna next week, potentially gaining another 500 points. Djokovic is not; if Murray wins in Vienna then he would go into the Paris Masters with only a 415 point deficit in the ATP Race with 1000 points for the winner, so that lead could be overturned by the time we come to the end of season tournament. Or it could open up again.

Do you folks actually care about the rankings? I know it's important to the players lower down, as it gets you into bigger tournaments and/or gets you an easier draw*.

But I'm really not bothered if my favourite player is ranked 3rd or 1st; tournament wins and Slams are the only interest.

Each to his own of course - I'm just asking :)

*(and OK, the top players also get a slightly easier draw, as I'm sure someone will point out!)

From the point of view of the draw, I don't think it makes any difference if you're 1 or 2. Unless 1 is always the same half of the draw, which might affect scheduling. I'm not sure if that's the case.

However, I think being world no. 1 is a big thing, myself. It has been slightly devalued in the women's game in the past when a world no.1 existed who had at the time never won a GS event. I'm not sure if that's ever happened in the men's game.

Murray's potential bucket list:

 - Wimbledon - ding, ding
 - Flushing Meadows - ding
 - Davis Cup - ding
 - Olympic Gold - ding, ding
 - Roland Garros - eeeh uuuh
 - Melbourne - eeeh uuuh
 - World no. 1 - eeeh uuuh
 - GOAT - eeeh uuuh
 - $$$$$ - ding ding ding ding

Looking at that list, Murray should throw everything at the AO and FO next year.

It matters if you are 2nd or 3rd. Third gives you a tougher draw.

Only if Andy Murray is no1.

Winning tournaments & slams is certainly more important than being No. 1, but given Murray has won 3 Slams, 2 Olympic gold medals, the Davis Cup and 13 Masters 1000 events it would be something else to add to his list of achievements rather than the only thing he's managed.

Marcelo Ríos got to No. 1 without winning a Grand Slam.

Yes, well done, but he needs to get his first serve percentages up though, his stats for Vienna were terrible. Still, if he's to be number 1 he needs someone else to beat Djokovic anyway.

A Djokovic win vs Murray in the final would leave the gap at 815 points.

The reverse result, 15 points (still in Djokovic's favour).

ATP finals were won by Djokovic last year, up to 1500 points to win there.

Interesting.... Novak out. And the first set between Murray and Berdych is into a tie break.

Edit: A mega tie break. I was in the process of typing "Murray will need 3 sets if he wants the No. 1 spot" when Berdych had five set points.

If he does it and wins the overall then he could still lose it at the O2. Not likely with Djokovic playing this way tbh.

Well, yes.  But that's not the point, surely. He'll have had the ranking.

And, as next year progresses, his early 2016 poor results will drop off, so as long as he maintains current form ...
