Well, Andy now knows he has to win all his remaining matches to retain his no. 1 ranking.

And he looks like doing the hard way, if he manages it at all  :-\

He only has to if Djokovic makes the final, surely?

The reason Andy is currently no. 1 is that Djokovic has been losing before the final in several tournaments.

I don't know the detail, but apparently losing a group match deducts 200 points from the maximum you can earn.

Andy's doing ok. That first set today went to a tiebreak, and the other ones were fine. He keeps his head together now when things are going the other way and keeps going until he wins.

From the rules:

ATP World Tour Finals 1,500 for undefeated Champion (200 for each round robin match win, plus 400 for a semi-final win, plus 500 for the final win)

Here is my understanding some of the ways it could play out.

IIRC Murray leads by 405 points as of now. If he loses on Friday and Djokovic wins tomorrow, and Cilic wins tonight, he will still lead by 205 points.

If they both then lose in the semi finals, Murray would still be no. 1. If Djokovic loses tomorrow and Murray wins, then Djokovic beats him in the final, Murray is no. 1 as Murray would have an insurmountable 605 point lead going into the final.

http://live-tennis.eu/ has the up to date points.

It seems that the other brother has beaten Andy, and is now World no. 0.5.  :P

There is a complication to the calculation for the year-end ranking, which is the 275 Davis Cup final points for last year coming off on Nov 28th.

That brings things a lot closer.

Hence why he has to win all his matches this week to retain the number 1 spot I guess.

As long as Djokovic gets to the final. He has a good H2H against Nishikori, so that seems more likely than not.

Watching Murray vs Raonic, and the observation was made that after the French open, Murray was 8000 points behind Djokovic.

Even if he wins this, I don't see him winning tomorrow unless he plays a lot better.

So that's 3:20, it'll be the new longest finals match when it finishes I think..
