Woo hoo for the new job!

I had a big old rant on the rant thread a couple of weeks ago about a particular supplier and their utter uselessness.  Today, I had a similar rant to them.  The phrase "OK.  Now I want to talk to your manager and escalate my complaint" may well have been used.  More than once.  They caved!  Engineer out, problem addressed, apology proffered and accepted and a small free gift as a goodwill gesture due to be shipped out.  Woo hoo!  Just a shame that I had to get to going_postal levels of anger before they finally did the right thing!

And a support  bod at a different company has promised that he will use appropriate levels of whoop and a happy dance as he closes the helpdesk ticket that I've had open with them since October and that today, at long last, he found the solution for.  I could have logged in to their support site and closed it myself after testing, but I wanted to share the joy :)

Why is it prop. driven? One would assume that a modern aircraft would be jet powered.

I'd guess for reliability.  I suspect you don't need as much in the way of airport infrastructure for prop aircraft and military planes often have to operate out of very primitive airfields.

Well it is a 3-shaft turbo-prop for a start. This type of aircraft is designed to take off and land from rough/unprepared terrains. Performance wise it can go up to Ma 0.72 when an airliner will cruise at .8 to .84, so the performance is not miles away. More imortantly though a turbo prop is versatile and can fly slow (paratrooping), and can land short on a variety of strips.

In terms of reliability it is hard to beat a gas turbine aeroengine though.

BTW the furture aero-engine looks to head back to open rotor design, i.e. with some of the blades on the outside and not dissimilar to the blades seen on this engine.

It doesn't need to fly very fast, or very high, but it needs to move around on the ground without being towed - including backwards (easier with props), use rough airstrips (props are less susceptible to damage from flying debris), land & take off steeply, & using short strips (easier with props). Probably other things, as well.

Very fancy props, & they rotate in different directions.

I just collected my latest bike purchase - the pinkest bike in the world, I suspect!  It's a incredibly zingtastic bright pink 18" wheeled Orbea single-speed for my friend's daughter (as I suspect the Raleigh I previously bought for her is a squeak big, she might struggle with gears and it'll take me until rather later than Christmas to learn to fix it!).  Everything works, not a scratch on it.  Very, very pink.  Someone's going to be extremely happy in a couple of weeks time :)

Step up No1Son: Officially you are now A Man. Feel the testosterone surge.

I don't know what you did, and I suspect you don't either, but whatever it was, thank you. The light is now working.

Bloody marvellous this morning, ice cannot deter me, for I have new light, powered by my not insubstantial thighs. OoooOoo.

And yes No1Son, you can have (pretty much) whatever you want, even though it's blatent favouritism. You fixed it, and you are my bestest boy Man now.

I have just been invited by a Brazilian institute to go an support their research next year. Okay it is a military institute but they do research in my area and use the technology I work on... That would be really nice!

Need to make it happen and to sell it to the company I work for too.

Just heard from HMRC that they are paying a substantial sum into my account tomorrow!!! 2.5 times what I was expecting, so happy days!

Must call in at Oxfam and spread the joy a little bit...

I had my first day in work (after 3.5 months of unemployment) and it went really well. Location lovely, the commute is straightforward and has nice little hills to negotiate and nearly all the staff cycle to work
