Dell's own wireless certainly did not work with Gutsy

Mine does.  I've never bothered with NDiswrapper.

Really? Are you sure its a Dell 1390/1490 wireless card or is it the (supported) Intel 3945 card - both were available for the D420.

Yes, you're right - it's an Intel.

Well bugger me, it said on the spec it was a Dell one :)

Well it was released in the last hour but now all the download servers are overloaded :(
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I can't say I'm surprised. I just took a look on Slashdot and the most recent story is Ubuntu 8.04 released. Remember folks, you heard it here first!

I was looking forward to installing it tonight. May have to set off a timed download and do it tomorrow night instead.

7.10 is a big improvement on 6.n

That's a very well-worth-doing upgrade.  I'm expecting the upgrade to 8.10 to be less radical and less urgent.

I upgraded to 7.10 immediately last time, and it was a bit buggy for a week or two afterwards.  I'm not rushing this time - I'll try it on one machine and see. For example, Acrobat Reader vanished for about a month, and it took several weeks to be able to use a scanner direct from a graphics program rather than the command line.

You might as well just skip Gutsy and go straight onto Hardy

I looked there but didn't see bittorrent. Not sure which one is best anyway and how to use it.

See here and here. You will need a bittorrent client to start the download. Google for a bittorrent client for windows. Or just download from one of the less busy mirrors over HTTP.

Is that advisable? Anyway, I like to wait a few weeks after any upgrade distribution  :)

Depends how you define "advisable" ;) I think it's recommended to upgrade one version at a time (although you can upgrade from the previous LTS release to this one). That's not to say it wouldn't work.

Anyway, I like to wait a few weeks after any upgrade distribution  :)

I like to run the betas as they become available.

Just tried installing the new release under windows - as a trial.

Looks OK so far.

Now I need a Linux/Ubuntu for dummies* guide.
