Really? Are you sure its a Dell 1390/1490 wireless card or is it the (supported) Intel 3945 card - both were available for the D420.

7.10 is a big improvement on 6.n

That's a very well-worth-doing upgrade. I'm expecting the upgrade to 8.10 to be less radical and less urgent.

I upgraded to 7.10 immediately last time, and it was a bit buggy for a week or two afterwards. I'm not rushing this time - I'll try it on one machine and see. For example, Acrobat Reader vanished for about a month, and it took several weeks to be able to use a scanner direct from a graphics program rather than the command line.

oh bother I was joy full a bit to fast, it have booted up but haven't mounted all the drives for some reason .... ?

See here and here. You will need a bittorrent client to start the download. Google for a bittorrent client for windows. Or just download from one of the less busy mirrors over HTTP.

Depends how you define "advisable"

I think it's recommended to upgrade one version at a time (although you can upgrade from the previous LTS release to this one). That's not to say it wouldn't work.

Just tried installing the new release under windows - as a trial.

Looks OK so far.

Now I need a Linux/Ubuntu for dummies* guide.
